Breast cancer was detected in two women out of 21 who underwent digital mammography last week at the Radiology Department of the Nikšić General Hospital.
"That's a large percentage - ten percent of the number of people examined," said the Head of the Radiology Service, Dr. Sanja Vrbica, during a visit by the President of the Municipal Assembly (MA) of Nikšić, Milica Lalatović Žižić.
According to Vrbica, the Radiology Service plans to implement a campaign of preventive mammography examinations for women in October, and the women of Nikšić will be informed about this in time. October is breast cancer prevention month.
"Until now, they had to go to Danilovgrad and Podgorica for mammogram examinations, and now, when we have the machine here, we will try to make maximum use of it and enable them to have examinations," said Dr. Vrbica.
The modern digital mammogram, which the General Hospital recently received from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and whose value is around 250 thousand euros, according to the director of the institution, Dr. Zoran Mrkić, is still not in the Health Fund's scheduling system.
"Patients can, in case of need and indication set by the surgeon, come to the head nurse themselves and they will receive an adequate, quick appointment when they will be able to receive this service," said Dr. Mrkić.
The President of the Nikšić Municipal Council emphasized that modern medical equipment, such as a digital mammogram, is "something that will be immeasurably and significantly important in the work of doctors and medical staff, in carrying out their noble mission, which is saving human lives."
"So it is very important to us that we have the opportunity for our fellow citizens to have regular checkups here," said Lalatović Žižić and appealed to fellow citizens to have preventive checkups.
She added that the local government's priority is to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Nikšić, with a special emphasis on healthcare.
She thanked The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for the extremely significant donation.
