The statement made by graphic designer Veljo Stanišić in a public television appearance represents unacceptable discriminatory speech that insults the dignity of members of the Roma community and encourages negative stereotyping, the Institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro announced.
"As an institution that advocates for the protection of the rights of all citizens, regardless of their ethnic, racial, religious or other affiliation, we strongly condemn this form of public speech, which further encourages discrimination and social alienation towards one of the most marginalized social groups. The use of derogatory and offensive terms towards any minority community is contrary to the goals of multiculturalism and undermines social cohesion," the Ombudsman's statement reads.
It is added that from the perspective of the Protector, it is particularly concerning that such an unacceptable statement is made by a person who is the recipient of the highest state award, which may additionally stimulate negative social perceptions towards Roma and send the wrong message about tolerating hate speech in public space.
"The Ombudsman expects a public apology from Mr. Stanišić because stereotyping, stigmatization, offensive and discriminatory speech are incompatible with the highest values of a democratic society, to which we strive," the statement concludes.
