Nikšić firefighters and rescuers had twice as many interventions during June and early July than in the same period last year, so due to the increased workload, they are working double shifts.
"Last year, from June to today (July 7), we had 126 interventions, and this year 263. What is worrying and what we are warning about is the increased number of traffic accidents with serious injuries and deaths. The number of forest fires has also drastically increased," the commander of the Nikšić Protection and Rescue Service told "Vijesti". Slavko Tadic.
Fires that are larger in scale and active for days are the forest fire in the Banjane region, in the village of Gornje Crkvice, about 75 kilometers from Nikšić, and in Tović.
"For the fifth day now, the Air-Helicopter Unit and the Army of Montenegro have been coming to our aid with their aircraft in the Banjan and Tovići areas. The pilots and their teams are more than professional and dedicated. They have had over 150 firefighting sorties in these two areas and we are grateful to them for their help and cooperation. Strong winds are making firefighting difficult in these two locations. Our firefighters and rescuers are on the ground and have excellent cooperation with the local population, who are helping with the firefighting," said Tadić.
According to him, they have about 15 interventions on average, not counting teams on larger fires that last for days.
"We are warning unscrupulous citizens that our inspections are on the ground and that we have already filed criminal charges against unidentified persons due to three fires," said Tadić.
