Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović called for the immediate removal of the monument to Pavle Đurišić, erected in the Berane village of Gornje Zaostro.
"On the occasion of the erection of a monument to Pavle Đurišić, commander of the Chetnik movement and war criminal, I call on the competent institutions to immediately take all legal measures: to establish responsibility and remove this monument without delay," he wrote on Iks.
He said that erecting a memorial to a person who symbolizes fascist collaboration, ethnic and religious hatred, and mass crimes against civilians represents a direct attempt to rehabilitate an ideology that is contrary to the fundamental values of anti-fascist Montenegro.
Anti-fascism, as he said, is not just a historical fact – it is a living and valid commitment of our state, clearly established in the Constitution and laws.
"Therefore, I demand URGENTLY: the removal of the monument, action by the Municipality of Berane, action by the Government, the police and the prosecutor's office. Montenegro must show that it is consistent in defending its fundamental anti-fascist values," said Milatović.
