The Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation will not support any initiative to change the names of educational institutions, said the relevant Minister, Anđela Jakšić Stojanović.
She spoke out after information in the media that there were initiatives to rename the "25.maj" Secondary Mixed School in Tuzi to "Besa Malesija".
"In connection with the increasingly frequent requests to change the names of educational institutions, we inform the public that the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation remains of the position that no name of an educational institution should be changed and therefore will not support any initiative on this topic," the post on social media reads.
She said that the names of educational institutions are not just formal designations, but a reflection of the time in which they were created, a testimony to the people and events that shaped an era, and that changing them would mean the loss of a precious part of cultural and historical heritage.
"At the same time, we emphasize that every new educational institution that is established in the future will be named after famous personalities and events that have marked our society. And most importantly - every one of our proposals will be based on the values that bring us together and unite us and that we are all proud of. In this way, we want to combine respect for heritage with the creation of new values and opportunities for generations to come," the minister said.
