It is necessary to continue continuous support for research and joint efforts to ensure that Brskovo takes the place it deserves on the cultural map of Montenegro.
This was concluded after the Brskovo archaeological site was visited by the President of the Municipal Assembly (MA) and the Tourist Organization (TO) of Mojkovac Marko Janketić and Radonja Vuković with the Secretary of the Ministry of Culture and Media Boško Kovačević.
Brskovo, said Janketić, “was one of the most developed cities of the Nemanjić state in the 13th century, an economic and mining center where the silver coins of King Uroš and his sons were minted, similar to Venetian groschens.” It was, he explains, the center of the parish of the same name, and was first mentioned on August 22, 1243, in a decision of the Kotor City Council to restrict wine trade and exports.
“…With the arrival of the Saxon Germans, the intensive development of mining began. They had their own prince, a Roman Catholic church, an independent judiciary and enjoyed a certain degree of autonomy. The sudden rise of Brskovo attracted merchants, especially the people of Dubrovnik and Kotor, who were tenants of the Brskovo customs and who fought for primacy in trade in the Nemanjić state,” recalls the president of the Municipal Assembly.
The Ministry of Culture and Media has allocated 25.000 euros for research at the site, which is a significant contribution to the preservation and further study of this important cultural and historical site. The research is being conducted by the Center for Conservation and Archaeology of Montenegro, and among the latest discoveries are the remains of a house at the Doganjica site. Part of the site has been completed with reconstructed architecture, which further confirms its historical significance.
Each new discovery contributes to a better understanding of the everyday life and cultural heritage of the people who lived here, and further research should ensure that Brskovo becomes an unavoidable point of cultural tourism in Montenegro, it was announced after visiting the site.
