The law also prescribed a five-year deadline for replacing old ID cards, which meant that all citizens were required to submit a request for a new ID card by the end of March this year. However, that deadline was also extended by half a year, to the end of September. Between April and mid-August, around 60.000 citizens replaced their ID cards.

The electronic ID card contains both electronic identification certificates and a qualified electronic signature. It can be used to prove identity in the digital world, and it also allows citizens to digitally sign documents.

If citizens want to use certificates from their electronic ID card, they need to activate the document. The activation data, PIN and PUK, come in the envelope with the new ID document, which citizens receive when they pick up their new ID card.
