It has been thirty-four years since the Parliament adopted the declaration proclaiming Montenegro the first ecological country in the world.
Ecological State Day - September 20, starting in 2022, is marked as a national holiday, which is celebrated during working hours.
The Declaration on the Ecological State of Montenegro was adopted at a session of the then republican parliament, which was held outdoors in Žabljak on September 20, 1991.
The declaration defines the state's strategic determination to adopt and apply the highest standards and norms in the field of environmental protection, nature conservation and economic development based on the principles of an ecologically sustainable system.
The vision of developing an ecological state is also incorporated into the highest political and legal act – the Constitution.
