Human Rights Action (HRA), Antifascists Cetinje and the Center for Civic Education (CCE) called on local governments to follow the example of Cetinje and pay tribute to individuals who chose peace, justice and human dignity in the most difficult times.
They remind that in May, the Assembly of the Royal Capital adopted the initiative of these three non-governmental organizations to name a street in the Pod Granicom neighborhood after Rear Admiral Krsto Đurović.
"Today marks 34 years since the death of Krsto Đurović, Rear Admiral of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA), who died in 1991 under still unclear circumstances in a helicopter crash, in the first days of the JNA attack on the Dubrovnik area of the Republic of Croatia. 'As long as I am commander, rest assured, not a single shell will fall on Dubrovnik,' Đurović told the then Dubrovnik mayor Petar Poljanić in September 1991. Because of his opposition to the aggression, he remained remembered as an example of humanity and humanity, and his name is still associated with slogans of peace, such as the one from the Liberal Alliance rally in Cetinje: 'From Lovćena the fairy cries, forgive us Dubrovnik,'" the joint statement reads.
They reiterate that it is not too late to establish the truth about Đurović's death.
"Early next year, a street will bear his name, preserving the memory of his anti-war spirit and reminding future generations of the obligation to oppose any military aggression. This also confirms the anti-war tradition of Cetinje - a city that, even in the most difficult years, showed dignified resistance to violence and destruction," they add.
They say that naming streets and other memorials remains "a precious way to preserve the memory of their lives and convey a message of peace and justice to new generations."
"We reiterate once again that it is not too late to establish the truth about the death of Krsto Đurović and we demand that all circumstances of his death be made public," said the HRA, Antifascists of Cetinje and CCE.
