Regional development expert and professor at the Polytechnic University of Turin, Loris Servilo, paid a three-day visit to Montenegro, with the aim of collecting information for the preparation of an analysis that will serve as the basis for the finalization of the Roadmap for Sustainable Development of the Northern Region.
This was announced by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS).
It is stated that the visit of the international expert was realized through cooperation between MERS and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), which secured his engagement.
MERS stated that the Directorate for the Development of the North has previously actively cooperated with UNOPS and held numerous meetings, with the aim of providing expert support and strategic guidelines for the development of the initial Roadmap.
"During the visit, expert Servilo met with representatives of MERS, as the host, and the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management, and the Ministry of Regional Investment Development and Cooperation with NGOs to discuss the challenges facing the northern region and the definition of development goals for establishing coordinated, sustainable and balanced development," the statement said.
It is stated that representatives of the ministries have shown a high level of willingness to cooperate in this important area, highlighting the development of the north as an item at the top of the agenda of all relevant departments.
As it is added, in discussions with representatives of local governments in the northern region, views were exchanged on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks of individual municipalities for development.
"It was noted that most municipalities in the north face similar challenges, such as waste management, water supply, infrastructure, and human resources," the statement said.
Participants agreed that a multisectoral approach and synergy at all levels is necessary to achieve balanced regional development.
Servilo highlighted examples of good practices that have shown effectiveness in overcoming territorial disparities in specific regions of Italy, but also across Europe.
He also referred to innovative approaches in creating new jobs, with the aim of retaining the population and improving the overall standard of living.
It is added that a significant segment was the field visit to learn about the important steps taken to meet the final benchmarks for the closure of Chapter 27, and the tours included visits to national parks, as well as regulated and unregulated waste disposal sites.
"It was concluded that the document prepared by the expert based on the meetings held, field visits and collected documents and suggestions will represent an excellent basis for the development of a Roadmap for the Sustainable Development of the Northern Region, which will unify local development initiatives, in line with national priorities and international support, into a single strategic framework," the statement said.
