In the Vežešnik tunnel, on the Mateševo - Podgorica road, at one hour and 20 minutes after midnight, a cargo vehicle carrying passenger electric cars spontaneously combusted.
As announced by Monteput, only thanks to the quick and coordinated reaction of the Service for Supervision, Traffic Management and Technical Protection and the Protection and Rescue Service, were more serious consequences and a potentially serious traffic accident in the Vežesnik Tunnel prevented.
"At 01.20, a cargo vehicle carrying passenger electric cars spontaneously caught fire. Upon receiving the report, Monteput's emergency services immediately activated the prescribed emergency procedures and took all protective measures. The fire was completely extinguished by 02.00, after which the vehicles were removed from the tunnel and conditions were created for normal traffic flow," Monteput announced.
They add that significant material damage to the tunnel infrastructure, ventilation systems, electrical installations, signaling and other safety components was prevented.
"Timely and coordinated intervention by the services avoided long-term consequences for the safety and functionality of the tunnel. Efficient intervention successfully prevented the spread of the fire, which was of particular importance considering the type of cargo - electric vehicles with lithium-ion batteries. These batteries develop extremely high temperatures, are prone to spontaneous combustion, and extinguishing them is a challenge both here and around the world. For this reason, the speed of intervention and proper assessment of the situation were of crucial importance for preserving the safety of the tunnel and protecting the infrastructure."
Monteput expressed gratitude to its services that participated in the action, confirming that all security and technical systems functioned in accordance with the highest standards.
