The Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) have launched the project "Improving Strategic Frameworks for AFOLU Sectors and Developing the Second National Forest Inventory", worth one million US dollars (863.558 euros), funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

MERS said that this project represents an important milestone in Montenegro's continued efforts to strengthen national systems and capacities to effectively address the challenges of climate change, in line with defined national priorities and commitments undertaken within the framework of the CFC.

As they explained, the initiative was designed to respond to the identified needs for improving institutional readiness and capacity building, identified in the draft National Program for the ZKF (2025).

"The project will directly contribute to the achievement of Montenegro's climate goals, with a particular focus on the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sectors," MERS believes.

The project, as they stated, is structured around two complementary components - strengthening national coordination mechanisms to overcome institutional, informational and financial barriers related to climate action and targeted support to the AFOLU sector, with a focus on improving institutional frameworks, improving data systems, developing methodologies and facilitating greater private sector involvement.

“The project represents the first step in addressing the country's urgent need for a Second National Forest Inventory through the finalization and validation of its methodology,” the statement said.

MERS said that the aim of the project is to integrate issues from the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sector into national climate strategies, as well as to improve Montenegro's readiness for future programs and investments within the framework of the CFC.
