The Director of the National Parks of Montenegro (NPCG), Marinela Đuretić, and the Executive Director of the Center for the Protection and Study of Birds, Jovana Janjušević, signed a Memorandum of Understanding today.

NPCG announced that the document was signed in order to work on strengthening and raising awareness, as well as improving the nature protection and biodiversity system, through joint activities and good practices, using innovative models and methods.

A special part of the memorandum refers to cooperation regarding the implementation of the project. "Return to traditional land use practices on the wet meadows of Lake Skadar” and other planned project activities.

"Our cooperation with CZIP is long-standing, considering the number of activities and projects that we jointly implement both in the parks and in the Ulcinjska Solana Nature Reserve, of which we are temporary managers. This document is just confirmation that we are on the right track and that we continue to strengthen our partnership with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of nature protection and biodiversity," said Đuretić.

Through this cooperation, as announced, the organization of joint activities will be implemented to strengthen the capacities of relevant stakeholders for adequate implementation of regulations in the field of nature protection from invasive species, work on sustainable management, sustainable development, information, networking, but also timely exchange of information between partners.

"We are pleased to sign this Memorandum with the management of the JPNPCG, which we have recognized as dedicated to precisely the goals that our organization also inherits, which is the protection and improvement of the state of biodiversity and nature in Montenegro. The Center for the Protection and Study of Birds is an implementation partner of the project "Return to Traditional Land Use Practices on Wet Meadows of Lake Skadar" and we believe that only through joint activities can we prepare a concept for the effective preservation of these areas from invasive species," said Janjušević.

The project "Return to Traditional Land Use Practices on Wet Meadows of Lake Skadar", within the IUCN RESCOM program, envisages mapping invasive plant species (Amorpha fruticosa, Ailanthus altissima and others) on 250 hectares on Lake Skadar, along with activities to suppress these species by mechanically mowing the selected plot. Also, in order to control invasive species, it is planned to donate six indigenous cattle to a livestock farmer who will undertake to take the donated cattle to graze on the selected location.

"JPNPCG and CZIP are collaborating with numerous partners in Montenegro to protect, promote, and sustainably develop the country's most valuable areas in order to raise the efficiency of biodiversity protection to a higher level," the statement reads.
