The Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Center for Bird Protection and Study (CZIP), the Montenegrin Society of Ecologists (CDE) and the EuroNatur Foundation, as implementing partners of the "Protection of the Morača River" project, with the aim of improving the development and implementation of activities in the field of environmental protection and biodiversity protection, as well as joint activities regarding the preparation of a concept for the efficient preservation of the Morača River.

This was announced today by MERS.

As stated in the statement, the document was signed by the relevant Minister Damjan Ćulafić, CZIP Executive Director Jovana Janjušević, CDE Secretary General Andrijana Mićanović and Euronatura representative Anete Spangenberg.

"The aim of the Memorandum is to formalize and improve cooperation between MERS and the aforementioned organizations, regarding the implementation of the "Morača River Protection" project and all planned project activities. The parties agreed to improve and strengthen cooperation in the field of biodiversity protection in Montenegro, through joint action and preparation of a feasibility study aimed at protecting this area," the statement reads.

MERS adds that the Memorandum agrees on cooperation in raising awareness about the importance of nature protection, biodiversity and key biodiversity points in Montenegro, as well as the organization of joint activities (training, seminars, round tables, events, public conferences and public debates) aimed at strengthening the capacities of relevant stakeholders for adequate implementation of regulations in the field of nature protection, sustainable management of protected areas, introduction of biodiversity into sectoral policies and practices, sustainable development, learning and networking.

Ćulafić emphasized that the Memorandum represents a significant step forward in institutional cooperation for the protection of Montenegro's biodiversity.

"Such cooperation is important for the sustainable management of the Morača River, but also for integrating nature protection into sectoral policies. The Ministry is committed to the long-term preservation of natural resources and this Memorandum sends a strong message that Montenegro takes its responsibility towards the environment and future generations seriously," said Ćulafić.
