Montenegro and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are entering into negotiations on signing an agreement on extradition and legal cooperation in criminal matters, it was announced at a meeting between the Ministers of Justice of Montenegro and the UAE, Bojan Božović and Abdullah bin Sutan bin Awad Al Nuaimi.
This, as assessed at the meeting, represents a very significant step in strengthening the contractual basis between the two countries, whose relations are at the highest level.
Božović, as announced by the Ministry of Justice, is on an official visit to the UAE, where he discussed with Al Nuaimi the potential for improving cooperation and on that occasion presented the reforms implemented in the context of Montenegro's membership in the European Union (EU).
"We are fully committed to the European integration process because it is imperative for our Government. Harmonization with the EU legal framework is a demanding process but crucial for the reform of the judicial system and the creation of a safe and reliable environment for citizens and the economy," said Božović.
At the same time, as Božović stated, Montenegro is strengthening ties with its strategic partners such as the UAE, which is confirmed by the interstate agreements signed this year.
Al Nuaimi, as reported, emphasized the importance of establishing cooperation between the two ministries of justice, saying that Montenegro is an important partner and friend, and that it can count on full support in the exchange of experiences, especially in the field of digitalization of the judiciary and models of peaceful dispute resolution.
“There are numerous opportunities for cooperation and we are ready to work with you at all levels to strengthen our contractual base as the foundation for future, even more successful cooperation,” said Al Nuaimi.
The interlocutors reportedly agreed that the interstate agreements have given an important impetus to cooperation between the two countries and that the time has come to strengthen the very good political relations and economic cooperation with a stronger legal framework.
"In this context, full readiness has been expressed to form working teams that will work in the coming period to create conditions for strengthening international cooperation in criminal matters, as well as in the field of extradition, but also in the domain of digitalization of the judiciary and the promotion of arbitration and mediation as a model of peaceful dispute resolution," the statement added.
It is stated that during the meeting it was announced that a period of more intensive cooperation is ahead for the two countries.
"And it was assessed that this is the right time to strengthen the contractual base and exchange best practices that will improve the efficiency and security of the legal system both for future investments and in other areas of mutual interest," the statement said.
