Knežević: Shut down the Pljevlja thermal power plant during a temperature inversion, creating a gas chamber effect

As Vaso Knežević from the NGO "Da zaživi selo" stated in a statement, Pljevlja has recently reached infamous records in sulfur dioxide concentrations, which, according to him, is a direct consequence of the pronounced temperature inversion that occurs in the winter period.

The Pljevlja thermal power plant should be shut down urgently during the temperature inversion, because the city is recording record concentrations of sulfur dioxide that are seriously endangering the health of the population, said Vaso Knežević from the non-governmental organization (NGO) "Let the Village Live".

As Knežević stated in the statement, Pljevlja has recently reached infamous records in sulfur dioxide concentrations, which, according to him, is a direct consequence of the pronounced temperature inversion that occurs in the winter period.

During such meteorological conditions, cold air masses descend into valleys, while warmer ones rise into the higher layers of the atmosphere, creating a closed system in which pollution cannot disperse.

"In such circumstances, Pljevlja functions like a pressure cooker - all air pollution remains trapped in the basin and accumulates further," warned Knežević.

Of particular concern, he points out, is the fact that the temperature inversion boundary is currently reaching an unusually high height, to the point that even the chimney of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant is "drowned in fog." This, he says, means that pollutants are not being emitted above the inversion layer, but remain above the city itself.

"In such conditions, a gas chamber effect is created, where all released pollution remains under a layer of fog and directly endangers the health of citizens," Knežević emphasized.

Because of all of the above, the NGO "Let the Village Come Alive" demands that the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant be shut down immediately until climatic and meteorological conditions stabilize, assessing that this is the only responsible measure in the current situation of extreme air pollution.
