URA: Pollution from Thermal Power Plant the same or greater than before ecological reconstruction

"It is true that this problem has existed for many years and that there have been similar situations before, but this type of ecological reconstruction has never been carried out before, and the TPP has been put into operation without the work being completed."

We have warned on several occasions that the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant would not be ready for operation on December 1. In the end, it was put into operation without the necessary permits prescribed by law, and not a single segment related to environmental reconstruction was put into operation, which was the main and only reason for the suspension of its operation for eight months, the GP UR announced regarding the alarming situation with air pollution in the Municipality of Pljevlja.

"In this way, EPCG and the Ministry of Energy, headed by Admir Šahmanović, knowingly endangered all citizens of Pljevlja, who believed that after the reconstruction was completed, the situation with the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant would be significantly more favorable when it comes to the emission of harmful gases," the statement reads.

They add that for days they were the only ones warning about "illegal activities" at the Pljevlja thermal power plant, but that the EPCG management and the Ministry of Energy kept quiet about the situation, which is why they are calling on the authorities to determine responsibility.

"It is true that this problem has existed for many years and that there have been similar situations before, but this type of ecological reconstruction has never been carried out before, and the TPP has been put into operation without the work being completed. We call on the authorities to urgently publish data on harmful gas emissions from the TPP, because we claim that they are the same or at a higher level than before the reconstruction," the URA GP announced.

The reason for this, as they state, is simple - neither the desulfurization plant nor the flue gas denitrification plant are operational at the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant.

Also, URA calls on EPCG to publish data from its systems for continuous monitoring of flue gases, in order to see the effects of ecological reconstruction, if any, through the reduction of emissions of dust particles, sulfur and nitrogen oxides.

"We will wait for the inspection findings, but if our allegations, after the publication of the measurement data, turn out to be correct, which unfortunately, we do not doubt, those responsible in the EPCG management must submit irrevocable resignations. We also expect the competent prosecutor's offices to be involved in the investigation of how and with whose consent the TPP was put into trial operation, whether the provisions of the Law on Spatial Planning and Construction of Facilities were complied with, as well as whether all competent inspection bodies gave the necessary consents for the trial operation," the GP URA announced.
