Thanks to the generations that fought and won for our city, the conditions have been created for us to enjoy freedom today, which we must preserve, inherit and pass on to future generations, said the Mayor of Podgorica, Saša Mujović.

He and the President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, laid a wreath at the Monument to the Partisan Fighter in Gorica, on the occasion of December 19th - the Liberation Day of Podgorica.

Mujović said that December 19th was the day when "no" was said to fascism - a retrograde ideology that threatened to conquer the world.

"Today we are here to mark that date, to show respect for the generations that fought and won for our city before us. Thanks to them, the conditions have been created for us to enjoy freedom today, which we must preserve, inherit and pass on to future generations, just as our ancestors left a good foundation for us," he pointed out.

Borovinić Bojović said that December 19th is one of the most important dates for Montenegro, but also for the capital.

"Today, the mayor and I paid tribute to all the fighters who bravely gave their lives in the fight for the freedom of Podgorica. The message from this place is that togetherness, peace and dignity are all that our city sincerely deserves," she said.

On this day, 81 years ago, Podgorica was liberated from the occupiers. During World War II, the city suffered extensive destruction and was bombed more than 70 times.
