January 4th - Cetinje's Foundation Day unites our history, identity and commitment to the values on which this city was created and exists, said Mayor Nikola Đurašković, congratulating his fellow citizens.
"Marking this special date, we recall the founding role of Ivan Crnojević, but also the crucial importance of Cetinje in shaping Montenegrin statehood, aware that it is precisely this heritage that obliges us to ensure that the values rooted here remain the foundation of our contemporary activities and future development," Đurašković wrote on Facebook.
He said that today's holiday has special symbolism in the year that marks the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro's independence, "the centuries-old aspirations of our people for freedom and state independence," because Cetinje was the place where these aspirations were "most clearly and consistently confirmed throughout history."
"Finally, on this special occasion, we commit that Cetinje, as before, will remain the city in which we live; the place we develop; the responsibility we do not leave to others; and above all - the value that, aware of its importance, we preserve and pass on to future generations. Because only with Cetinje, Montenegro remains eternal," said the mayor.
