The executive director of the Podgorica city company "Water Supply and Sewerage", Aleksandar Nišavić, said that already They have been working for some time on a permanent solution to the turbidity problem at the Mareza water source, and the wider water basin of the source has never been examined in detail before.

Nišavić says that the ultimate goal is to obtain accurate data on where all the water comes from to the Mareza water source, as well as to provide a long-term solution, stable water supply quality, with constant monitoring and transparent information to citizens.

He points out that work is ongoing to permanently resolve the problem of turbidity at the Mareza water source, although, as he says, this is not a short-term process.

"The wider water catchment area of the source has never been examined in detail before, and these are very sensitive and complex analyses that are financially demanding and challenging for expert teams. This process requires the engagement of not only Vodovod, but also other services and institutions, because it is a complex system. The ultimate goal we are striving for is to obtain accurate data on where all the water comes from to the Mareza water source, to provide a long-term solution, stable water supply quality, with constant monitoring and transparent information for citizens," Nišavić told the Radio-Television Podgorica portal, as reported by the local public broadcaster.

He recalls that in cooperation with the Capital City, as well as the companies "Čistoća" and "Deponija", the cleaning of the side drainage channels, and primarily the main channel/bed of the Mareza River, has begun after more than 15 years.

"In this way, the canal is restored to function, allowing for faster drainage of excess water and providing long-term benefits in solving the problem of turbidity at the water source. During 2025, the side canal towards Dalj was cleaned, while this year, efforts will be made to continue cleaning the entire canal/bed, all the way to the confluence of the Mareza River into the Morača River. The funds involved are several hundred thousand euros, but it is an investment that is necessary and must have priority in planning, because this water source supplies drinking water to about 60 percent of the citizens of the Capital," said Nišavić.
