One hundred and forty-five years is not just a number, but a measure of a long and valuable journey through culture and education, written with knowledge, books and people who believed that education is the foundation of a free, responsible and mature society, said the President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović.
As announced by the Assembly, Borovinić Bojović said this at the opening ceremony marking the 145th anniversary of the existence of the Public Institution "Radosav Ljumović" National Library, one of, as they said, the most important cultural institutions in the Capital City.
The statement states that in her address, Borovinić Bojović recalled the historical significance of the Podgorica Reading Room with Library, founded in 1881 at the initiative of Marko Miljanov Popović, emphasizing that it is an institution that has represented a beacon of knowledge, ideas and dialogue for decades.
"The Director of the Public Institution 'Radosav Ljumović' Slavica Ilinčić emphasized that the Library represents one of the key pillars of the cultural identity of Podgorica and Montenegro, emphasizing the importance of continued support for cultural institutions," the Capital City Assembly said in a statement.
The attendees were also addressed by the Minister of Culture and Media, Tamara Vujović, who, as reported, pointed out the development and contemporary role of the Library as an open and vibrant cultural space, as well as the dedication of the employees who contribute to its importance for the community with their work.
"The management of the Public Institution of the National Library 'Radosav Ljumović' expressed its gratitude to all readers, associates and friends of the Library for the trust, support and loyalty they show through membership and active participation in its work. As an expression of gratitude for the long-standing support and with the aim of further opening the Library to citizens, it was announced that free membership will be introduced in 2026, which once again confirms the commitment of this institution to make knowledge, culture and books available to everyone," the statement concludes.
