Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić nominated special information and a decision to declare the red mud basin rehabilitation project a matter of public interest, councilor and president of the Democrats in Zeta board Luka Krstović.
"Dear citizens of Zeta and Podgorica, the remediation of red mud will be a matter of public interest! The state is taking the most decisive step in the 60 years of the red mud basin's existence! The biggest environmental, and thus health challenge for Zeta, are the red mud basins. I have been talking about this for years," said Krstović.
"I understand the current challenges, especially the fact that the cadastral situation is such that it is private property, which is one of the barriers to more efficient problem solving. And I support the dialogue in that field, which I am familiar with because I am in regular communication with the relevant Minister Ćulafić, and I know how actively the work is being done on it. And it was from that regular communication that I learned today that Minister Ćulafić nominated special information and a decision to declare the red mud basin rehabilitation project a matter of public interest," said the Democrat official.
He says that "as a resident of Zeta, he received this information and news with joy," and that he sees such a step as proof that the Government, namely the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development, "is already concretely working on resolving this important issue for Zeta."
"Public interest advertising is truly a concrete message from the state! Zeta is the jewel of Montenegro, whether someone likes it or not. These are difficult days and let there be more good news! Zeta's heritage and meadows have been raised by generations, and they will continue to be," said Krstović.
In October last year, Ćulafić said that the issue of remediation of the red mud pool at the Podgorica Aluminum Plant cannot be a topic that is postponed and that as the relevant minister, he will use all mechanisms to systematically resolve this issue.
At its session on December 10th last year, the government adopted 12 conclusions regarding the wastewater treatment plant in Botun, the construction of which is opposed by locals.
One of them states that it is planned to initiate the remediation process of the red mud pool in Botun, as well as the hazardous waste landfill in the KAP zone, without delay; and that the plant will not be put into operation until the remediation of the red mud pool is completed.
Yesterday, when asked if there was money for the rehabilitation of the red mud basin and whether that promise would be realized, the Mayor of Podgorica, Sasa Mujovic, said that he "absolutely will", recalling that the government budget envisaged a loan of 32 million euros for that purpose.
In an interview for the show "Načisto", when asked when the process should begin, he said that the rehabilitation should begin as soon as work on the plant in Botun begins.
