Germany is ready to raise defense cooperation with Montenegro to a higher level in the upcoming period, as a credible ally, said German Ambassador to Podgorica Peter Felten.

A delegation from the German Ministry of Defense, led by Felten, paid a working visit to the Ministry of Defense of Montenegro, with the aim of considering modalities for further cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense.

As announced by the Montenegrin Ministry of Defense, the meeting was opened by the relevant Minister, Dragan Krapović, who stated that he was satisfied with the defense cooperation between the two countries.

He pointed to continued German support during the defense sector reform process, through numerous trainings and donations.

"He informed that Montenegro continues to strengthen its defense capacities in order to ensure national, but also actively contribute to collective security," the statement said.

Krapović said that the modernization of the Montenegrin Army, in line with NATO capability goals, is one of the key priorities of the Ministry of Defense, adding that Montenegro is carefully considering possibilities for cooperation with allies, especially in the field of defense industry.

He said that Montenegro is committed to meeting the goals set by The Hague, which concern increasing defense spending, and pointed out that a third of the allocated funds are intended for the modernization of defense capacities.

"Ambassador Felten also greeted those present, expressing Germany's readiness to elevate defense cooperation with Montenegro, as a credible ally, to a higher level in the coming period," the statement said.

According to the Ministry, the interlocutors discussed current geopolitical issues.

"Emphasizing that unpredictable security challenges dictate the need to strengthen collective resilience, precisely through joint defense projects for which both sides expressed readiness during the meeting," the statement said.
