The Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) organized an Information Day dedicated to the development of local municipal and non-hazardous construction waste management plans, at which representatives of local governments had the opportunity to learn about specific information and practical guidelines in this process.
The department reminded that the adoption of the National Waste Management Plan for the period 2025–2029 created strategic and normative frameworks, as well as a clear obligation for local self-government units to adopt their own waste management plans.
State Secretary at MERS, Zoran Dabetić, said, opening the info session, that it was organized with the aim of the Ministry providing local governments with concrete expert support, clarifying any doubts and answering all questions regarding the development of these plans.
"Our cooperation, of course, does not end with this meeting. MERS remains open to continued communication and assistance, so that we can jointly ensure that local plans are prepared with quality and adopted within the stipulated deadlines," Dabetić emphasized.
He said that they are aware of the challenges that local governments face, especially when it comes to financial and technical capacities.
"That is precisely why we want to be a reliable partner in this process," said Dabetić.
He recalled that these activities are part of the broader fulfillment of obligations defined in the Roadmap for meeting the final benchmarks within the negotiating Chapter 27 - Environment and Climate Change.
"This is one of the most demanding negotiation chapters, both due to the complexity of the topics it covers and the significant financial resources needed for its implementation," Dabetić pointed out.
Independent advisor at the Directorate for Ecology, Branka Milašinović, through a presentation on the obligations of local self-government units based on the Law on Waste Management and the National Waste Management Plan, presented in detail the obligations, guidelines and next steps in the process of developing local waste management plans.
MERS said that representatives of local governments participated in the discussion by asking questions, providing proposals and suggestions.
