The Media Union of Montenegro (SMCG) announced today that it is concerned about the police's treatment of Petar Komnenić, the author of the show "Načisto", after it was broadcast on Television Vijesti.
They said they believed that the journalists' waiting in front of the editorial office building immediately after the broadcast was inappropriate and unnecessary.
"Such action left an impression of urgency and repressiveness, which was not justified in this case. If there is a need to collect certain information from journalists, we emphasize that this can be done without creating pressure and without moves that send a message of intimidation. The question of the purpose of such urgent action is particularly raised, bearing in mind that the journalist publicly explained the circumstances and content of the conversation during the broadcast itself," the SMCG statement states.
According to them, in a democratic society, the reactions of the competent authorities must be measured and proportionate, without symbolism that could act as a warning to the media.
"We would like to remind you that Komnenic has previously been threatened with prosecution by the highest police officials. We hope that this will not become the practice of treating journalists who ask questions to which state officials have no answers," the statement reads.
