Minister of Internal Affairs Danilo Šaranović and Director of the Police Administration Lazar Šćepanović met with the president and members of the Council for Civilian Control of Police Work to discuss the results of cooperation so far and improve models of future joint action.
The meeting, the Ministry of the Interior announced, assessed that the previous cooperation between the Police Directorate and the Council was professional, high-quality and based on mutual trust, with mutual willingness to continue and further improve such practice through more intensive communication and exchange of information of mutual importance.
"The interlocutors agreed that direct forms of communication have enabled a faster and more efficient analysis of relevant issues, with the readiness of both sides to contribute, through continuous dialogue, as well as through the advice and recommendations of the Council, to the prevention and elimination of possible irregularities, strengthening professionalism and legality of actions, especially in situations of application of legal powers of police officers," it was announced.
Šaranović, it was added, emphasized that the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Police Directorate remain consistently committed to transparent and responsible work, strengthening institutional trust and continuously improving standards in the area of protecting citizens' rights and lawful conduct of police officers.
He emphasized that the Council for Civilian Control of Police Work represents a significant corrective mechanism in the system of democratic oversight, and pointed out that in the previous period, mechanisms and systems for controlling police work have been improved, with the Council playing a particularly important role as a reliable partner and an important support in further strengthening integrity, professionalism and legality in police work.
The President of the Council for Citizen Control of Police Work, Prof. Dr. Dražen Cerović, expressed his expectation that the partnership cooperation will continue in the coming period, emphasizing that the Council, through its work so far, has made a significant contribution to strengthening transparency, accountability and citizens' trust in the work of the police, as well as to affirming the principles of the rule of law and the protection of human rights, it was announced.
