The tree planting campaign in the yard of the "Njegoš" Elementary School (OS) in Spuž marked the beginning of the greening project for schoolyards in Montenegro, which is being implemented as part of the national environmental campaign "Take care, and it will take care of you", the European House announced.

It is reported that the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Montenegro Johan Sattler, Minister of Education, Science and Innovation Anđela Jakšić Stojanović, Principal of the "Njegoš" Elementary School Tatjana Jokić, and the initiator of the "Let's Green Montenegro" initiative, Vuk Vujisić, participated in the tree planting campaign today.

As stated by the European House, this expands the scope of the national environmental campaign "Take care, let it take care of you" to include the greening of schoolyards and the development of outdoor classrooms throughout Montenegro.

"This activity marks the beginning of the campaign component dedicated to schools, which is being implemented in cooperation with the non-governmental organization "Let's Green Montenegro". As part of the initiative, schoolyards will be enriched by planting tree rows and gradually establishing outdoor classrooms, thus creating a greener and more stimulating learning environment," the statement says.

It is stated that the "Njegoš" Elementary School is one of ten schools selected by the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation, in which educational workshops on environmental crime have already been organized as part of the school campaign program.

Sattler said that greener schoolyards, more trees and outdoor classrooms are not just a matter of improving the physical environment of schools, but also about creating spaces where learning and respect for nature become part of everyday life.

He stated that these activities are part of the broader environmental campaign "Protect and let it protect you", which in less than a year has grown into a truly national effort, bringing together institutions, businesses, civil society, media and schools.

"If we want lasting change, it all starts here – not with slogans, but with learning, daily practice, and a space that inspires conservation," said Sattler.

Jakšić Stojanović said that today's tree planting campaign is not just another activity within the "Protect and Let It Protect You" campaign, but represents the beginning of a broader vision in which schoolyards become spaces for learning, research, and the development of awareness about environmental conservation.

"At a time when there is increasing talk about sustainable development, climate change and environmental preservation, it is our responsibility to bring these topics closer to the youngest, but not only through theory, but also through concrete activities like today's," said Jakšić Stojanović.

She said that the Ministry will continue to support initiatives that improve the quality of education and at the same time contribute to the creation of sustainable communities.

On June 5th last year, the EU Delegation initiated the "Protect and Let It Protect You" campaign, by forming the Coalition of the Willing, which brings together institutions, civil society organizations, municipalities, schools, media, and business people dedicated to environmental protection in Montenegro.

The European House stated that numerous concrete results have been achieved since the start of the campaign, including seven clean-up actions across the country, the launch of a digital platform for reporting environmental violations, the establishment of specialized police and prosecutorial teams to combat environmental crime, and the introduction of a system for recycling old car tires.

"Additional activities are planned in the coming months, including a nationwide cleanup of discarded car tires, cleanups along key traffic routes ahead of the summer tourist season, continued activities to reduce the use of plastic bags, as well as expanding environmental education and greening initiatives in schools across Montenegro," the statement said.
