The competent institutions must react faster and more decisively when it comes to protecting the environment, said the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatović.
Milatović, as announced by his office, participated today in the Orjen Nature Park cleanup campaign, organized as part of the national campaign "Protect and let it protect you".
It is stated that Milatović, together with representatives of the European Union Delegation, competent institutions, the Municipality of Herceg Novi, utility services, volunteers and students from several schools, contributed to the cleaning of the area, emphasizing the importance of joint action in preserving natural resources.
In his address, Milatović thanked environmental activists for everything they do, because, as he said, they have been the driving force in raising environmental awareness in the country in the past.
According to the President's office, he sent three important messages when it comes to nature protection.
"The first is that we have gathered today to further draw public attention to the protection of space and ecology. I always remind you that an ecological state is at the foundation of our statehood and that all of us, both institutions and the community, must work much harder to strengthen environmental awareness in Montenegro," said Milatović.
According to him, the second message is that the competent institutions must react faster and more decisively when it comes to protecting the area.
He stated that in the previous period, a lot has been done to combat certain forms of ecocide, such as illegal gravel exploitation in the central region and the devastation of forest resources.
"However, we are not yet completely finished with these practices. We are also witnessing recent cases of devastation in the Bay of Kotor, within the UNESCO protected area, which is why I appeal to the competent authorities to act more decisively," said Milatović.
He added that the third message is "that this is not just a fight between the executive branch and local governments."
"It is necessary to involve the state prosecutor's office and the judiciary more strongly, because in Montenegro someone must be held accountable for the various types of ecocide that have occurred and continue to occur," said Milatović.
The statement states that protecting nature is not a choice, but an obligation, towards us and towards generations to come.
