The European Diplomas for 2026, awards awarded by the Council of Europe (CoE), were awarded to four Montenegrin cities - Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, Berane and Petnjica, it was announced on the website of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Borovinić Bojović: The recognition comes as confirmation that the Capital City consistently develops policies based on European principles.
The Office of the President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, announced on this occasion that Podgorica is among the winners of the Council of Europe's European Diploma for 2026, and that it is an award given to cities dedicated to strengthening European values and international cooperation.
"This recognition comes as confirmation that the Capital City consistently develops policies based on European principles - openness, cooperation and active participation of citizens in building a community," Borovinić Bojović emphasized, according to a statement published on the website of the Capital City Assembly.
The statement says that Borovinić Bojović emphasized the importance of initiatives that position Podgorica as a reliable partner on the European path.
The Capital City Assembly announced that the awarded cities include the Montenegrin municipalities of Berane, Petnjica and Bijelo Polje, as well as numerous cities from Europe, including cities from Germany, Italy and Turkey, which, according to the statement, further confirms the significance of this recognition and the standards that Podgorica is achieving in the European context.
"The European Diploma represents an important step within the Council of Europe's award system, but also a strong and encouraging confirmation that the Capital is heading in the right direction. It further obliges us to continue to improve the quality of life of our citizens, strengthen international cooperation, and build an open, modern, and European Podgorica," said Borovinić Bojović.
Smolović: The award belongs to everyone – both the local administration and the citizens of Bijelo Polje
In a statement, the President of the Municipality of Bijelo Polje, Petar Smolović, said that "this significant recognition confirms that this municipality consistently follows the values of development, democracy, unity and European cooperation."
"The award belongs to everyone - both the local government and the citizens of Bijelo Polje who, through their active participation, contribute to building a better and more prosperous community. It also obliges us to continue to act responsibly, transparently and in the best interest of the public," emphasized Smolović.
The European Diploma, he added, "represents an important step in our further progress, but also a strong incentive for an even more determined continuation of work towards new successes, higher European recognitions and improving the quality of life of all citizens."
"The Municipality of Bijelo Polje remains a reliable and credible partner in international initiatives, dedicated to the development of a modern, open and prosperous community in accordance with European standards," concluded Smolović.
