The Center for Civic Education (CCE) announced that it is recalling one of the most tragic events in the recent history of Montenegro, when 27 years ago NATO bombed the town of Murino.
The NGO said they pay tribute to the innocent victims of this tragedy and recall the lasting consequences that have marked their families and the local community.
"Six civilians were killed in the attack: Julija Brudar (11), Olivera Maksimović (13), Miroslav Knežević (14), Vukić Vuletić (46), Milka Kočanović (69) and Manojlo Komatina (72), while eight people were injured. A bridge was destroyed and numerous buildings were damaged," the statement said.
According to them, although NATO informed the authorities in advance about the planned targets, citizens were not warned, which could have prevented civilian casualties.
"The issue of the responsibility of those who were obliged to protect the citizens of Murin still remains open. Only last year, the victims of the NATO bombing in Murin, through amendments to the Law on Veterans and Disability Protection, were recognized as civilian victims of war, and their families were granted one-time compensation," the CCE said in a statement.
They said that the memory of Murino obliges us to cultivate a culture of remembrance, insist on responsibility, and through education based on verified facts, convey to young generations the truth about the past and the suffering of innocent civilians, in order to build a future of peace and empathy.
"This is the only way to preserve the memory of the victims from abuse and manipulation, primarily by those politicians who were never held accountable for pushing Montenegro and its citizens into the insane wars of the 90s," the statement concludes.
