The residents of the Ulcinj Local Community of Darza are resolutely opposed to the reopening of the quarry and stand by the position they submitted in writing to the relevant services and government departments earlier this year.

This was decided at the meeting of the Local Community on May 7, on the occasion of the Public Discussion on the Draft Concession Act for the location of non-metallic mineral raw materials of technical and construction stone at the “Darza” deposit in the municipality of Ulcinj.

The decision was submitted to the Ministry of Energy and Mining, which from April 24 to May 11, submitted the draft Concession Act for public discussion.

Residents of the villages of Briska Gora, Darza, Ćurkaj, Sutjel and Sveti Đorđe, which belong to the Darza Local Community, protested in January this year during the public debate on the Annual Plan for Granting Concessions for Detailed Geological Research and Exploitation of Mineral Raw Materials in 2026, opposing the opening of the quarry, because, as they said at the time, they had only suffered damage from it in the past.

"This location is located near houses, a school, and farms, and in the wider area there is agricultural land suitable for farming and livestock, which would suffer due to the proximity of the quarry and the works in it. From previous experience, we point out that the quarry has caused us multiple damages in the past, which is reflected, among other things, in the damage to the road infrastructure caused by the use of heavy transport vehicles," reads the letter that was then forwarded to the Ministry and the municipal Secretariat for Agriculture, Rural Development and Ecology.

The locals demanded that their explanation be taken into account and did not give their consent to the planned concession.

The local community, which covers perhaps the most picturesque areas of Ulcinj, has a total of about 250 residents.
