Montenegro remains strongly committed to improving migration management policies, with full respect for human rights, international standards and principles of international cooperation, said Minister of Interior Danilo Šaranović, according to a statement from his department.
He participated in the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF), held in New York at the United Nations, where he addressed the general debate dedicated to the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
"In his address to the Forum participants, Minister Šaranović emphasized that Montenegro remains strongly committed to improving migration management policies, with full respect for human rights, international standards and principles of international cooperation. He emphasized that contemporary migration challenges require a responsible, humane and coordinated approach, based on dialogue, partnership and joint action of states and international organizations," the statement said.
As they said, speaking about the activities implemented by Montenegro in the previous period, the minister recalled that a special focus was on developing a multisectoral approach to migration management, through strengthening institutional coordination and adopting key strategic documents, including the Strategy on Migration and Reintegration of Returnees, the Integrated Border Management Strategy, the Schengen Action Plan and the Strategy for Combating Trafficking in Human Beings.
"As part of the general debate, several member states and international organizations pointed out that migration remains one of the key global issues of the modern world, emphasizing that no country can respond independently to the challenges posed by irregular migration, human trafficking, humanitarian crises and security risks. The common message of the participants was that a sustainable migration policy must be based on international cooperation, the protection of human rights, strengthening border security and a more efficient institutional response to increasingly complex migration flows," the Ministry of Internal Affairs said.
They add that the minister particularly emphasized the importance of international partnership and cooperation with relevant international organizations and United Nations mechanisms, expressing gratitude to partners who support Montenegro in implementing the goals of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
Concluding his address, Šaranović said that the successful implementation of the Global Compact depends on continuous dialogue, mutual trust and harmonization of national policies with global standards, emphasizing that Montenegro will continue to be a reliable partner to the international community in addressing migration challenges.
