Stražica in Pljevlja was once again a place of remembrance and respect for the victims of fascism and freedom fighters. On the occasion of May 9th - Victory Day over Fascism, wreaths were laid today, at separate times, by delegations of local authorities, political parties, veterans' organizations and citizens.
Representatives of the Municipality and Municipal Assembly of Pljevlja, the Municipal Committee of the Democrats, the Organization of NOR Fighters and citizens first laid wreaths at the memorial at Stražica, where the crypt contains the remains of 246 fighters killed in the Battle of Pljevlja, 118 members of the Partisan brigades killed in the territory of the Pljevlja municipality, as well as 80 patriots shot at Stražica and Senjak during the National Liberation War.
On that occasion, it was emphasized that May 9th has been an occasion for decades to gather at this place to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives in the fight against fascism and for freedom. It was stated that remembering them represents a permanent obligation to preserve history from oblivion.
Representatives of the Municipality also laid a wreath at the site of the pit containing the remains of soldiers who fought "for the king and the fatherland."
Nova councilor Božidar Jelovac said that this way, we pay tribute to all those who died, not only the victims of fascism, but also the victims of, as he stated, the "unfortunate civil war" of that time, with the hope that in the future there will be universal reconciliation and joint commemoration without division.
In the second session, wreaths were laid at the memorial ossuary on Stražica by representatives of the Association of Fighters and Antifascists of Pljevlja (UBNOR), the Municipal Board of the DPS, the European Union, the Bosniak Party, and citizens.
The President of UBNOR Pljevlja, Goran Čavić, said that May 9th is the date when the ideology of hatred, racism and crime was defeated, and that the freedom-loving peoples of Europe, including the people of this region, have shown that no force can defeat a man who defends his freedom.
He emphasized that the fighters of the People's Liberation War fought for the ideals of freedom, equality and brotherhood, and warned that the phenomena of neo-fascism, extreme nationalism, hate speech and historical revisionism, which pose a threat to peace and human dignity, are still present today.
"Antifascism is not a thing of the past or a fad, but an enduring civilizational value," the rally said.
Victory Day over Fascism is celebrated on May 9, the day when Nazi Germany signed the capitulation in 1945, ending World War II in Europe. GM
