Regarding the appearance of a brown bear in the village of Bijelo Polje in the municipality of Zeta, we would like to inform the public that a representative of the Intervention Team went to the field and determined that the possible cause of the appearance of the bear in this settlement is inadequate waste management, i.e. irregular emptying of containers in that part of the village, the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry announced.
As they add, this problem was recorded, after which the Municipality of Zeta was contacted and urgent waste removal and emptying of the containers was agreed upon.
"The intervention team will continue to monitor the situation on the ground in the coming days and take measures to protect citizens and prevent any unwanted situations. We would like to emphasize that inadequate waste management is one of the leading reasons for the appearance of bears in populated areas. Food scraps and overcrowded containers represent an easily accessible source of food for wild animals, which is why they are increasingly approaching human settlements, which increases the risk of conflict between people and wild animals," they say.
As they said, they therefore appeal to all municipalities in Montenegro, and especially to municipalities in the north of the country, to ensure regular and responsible municipal waste management during the tourist season and periods of increased tourist influx, including more frequent emptying of containers and maintenance of their surroundings.
"Timely waste removal is one of the key preventive measures to prevent bears and other wild animals from entering populated areas," they conclude.
