A group of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and activists who in recent days have requested a ban on Baja Mali Knindža's performance in Pljevlja have welcomed the decision of the Police Directorate to grant their appeals. The police have banned the concert scheduled for May 21st at Trg 13. jul.
In a joint press release, this group of NGOs and activists expressed their belief that a responsible and lawful decision was made, confirming that institutions have an obligation to protect public order and peace, the safety of citizens, as well as the multiethnic and civic character of Montenegro.
"It is particularly important that the Police Directorate, in its explanation, recognized the risks of endangering human rights and freedoms, special minority rights, as well as the possibility of disrupting interethnic harmony and the security of citizens and property. Such an assessment confirms what we have been pointing out - that public space must not be used for events that may deepen divisions, incite tensions and threaten social cohesion," the statement added.
The signatories said they expect all political structures and organizers of public events to demonstrate responsibility towards the community and refrain from initiatives that may cause division and destabilization, especially in environments that require additional attention when it comes to preserving interethnic trust.
"Montenegro is a civil and multiethnic state and the protection of these values is the obligation of all institutions and social actors," the statement concludes.
