On May 21st, Montenegro marks 20 years since the restoration of independence.

Congratulations and messages arrived on this occasion.

Fejzić: I am proud of the date and the contribution of my believers to this achievement

The Head of the Islamic Community, Rifat Fejzić, congratulated the holiday, noting that he was proud of "the date and the contribution of his believers to that achievement."

"Exactly 20 years ago, I circled 'YES' for an independent, sovereign, civil and constitutional-ecological Montenegro. Today, I am immensely proud of that historic step, as well as the contribution of my believers to this great achievement. Happy 20th birthday, my only homeland," he announced on Iks.

Butorović: The restoration of independence was the one that brought together

Minister without portfolio Milutin Butorović congratulated citizens on Independence Day.

"Exactly 20 years ago, we made history. The restoration of Montenegro's independence, as these two decades have confirmed, was one that brings people together. Everyone found their place in our house, no matter how they felt and declared themselves. At the same time, our country also found its place in the world - internationally recognized, a member of the United Nations, NATO, the Council of Europe and numerous other organizations, and soon a member of the European Union," he said.

"All this, while practically from scratch, it built institutions, a system, an economy. On that path, which, admittedly, was not flawless, we learned important lessons, as well as the most important one - to never give up! Just as the water polo players did not give up in Malaga, the handball players in London, literally just as an individual who firmly believes in their ideals can consistently surrender. While Durmitor, Hajla and Lovćen stand proudly behind us, while this Mediterranean sun warms us and the Adriatic Sea washes us, and while her sons and daughters are with us, ours, independent and European Montenegro will be eternal and proud!", he added.

Janović: Montenegro is being built with responsibility towards the common good

Independent MP Nikola Janović congratulated the citizens of Montenegro on Independence Day.

"Twenty years of restored statehood confirm that Montenegro is being built with responsibility towards the common good, knowledge and dignity. Happy Independence Day — may it last through generations!", he said in a post on Iksu.

Živković: We are all Montenegro

Danijel Živković, president of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), congratulated all citizens on Independence Day.

"On May 21, 2006, in peace and dignity, we said a single sentence: we are our own. Those were not empty words. It was the beginning of a responsibility — a responsibility towards our ancestors who paid with their lives for today's freedom, and towards the children who will grow up free in this country. Twenty years later, Montenegro stands. It builds. It progresses. And it remains its own," Živković stated in his congratulatory message.

At this solemn moment, he adds, I congratulate all citizens of Montenegro, all Montenegrins, Serbs, Bosniaks, Albanians, Croats, Muslims, Roma and all who call this country home.

"Because we are all Montenegro. We are all the strength of our ancestors and the pledge of our future. May Montenegro be eternally free," concluded Živković.

Pejović: Let's continue to build a state that belongs to everyone

Deputy President of the Parliament of Montenegro Boris Pejović sent a congratulatory message to citizens on the occasion of Independence Day - May 21st.

"Today, Montenegro marks 20 years since the restoration of independence. Two decades later, regardless of how anyone voted in 2006 – or whether they even had the right to vote then – Montenegro is equally a country for all of us. It is our shared obligation to preserve it, develop it and leave it stronger for generations to come," he said in his congratulatory message.

The decision of the citizens of Montenegro, Pejović added, for our country to take full responsibility for its future also meant the obligation to further affirm civil society and democratic principles, based on equality, respect for human rights and diversity.

"Commitment to peace, tolerance and cooperation, both within our borders and with our neighbours and international partners, must remain at the heart of all our efforts. Today, as Montenegro stands on the threshold of membership in the European Union, we have reason to look to the future with more optimism. The results we have achieved in the previous period confirm that our country has the capacity to be a stable, orderly and European state, based on the rule of law and equal opportunities for all citizens. I call on all citizens of Montenegro to spend this holiday in the spirit of togetherness, solidarity and mutual respect. May this day inspire us to continue building a state that belongs to everyone and in which every citizen will be able to achieve their full potential. Happy Independence Day of Montenegro," concluded Pejović.

Jokić: Let's continue to build a society of equal opportunities and peace

With special pleasure, on the occasion of May 21st, Independence Day, I extend my most sincere congratulations to all citizens of Kotor and Montenegro, said Vladimir Jokić, President of the Municipality of Kotor.

"Twenty years since the restoration of independence testify that the most important values of a society are built persistently, through trust, coexistence, solidarity and faith in a common future. Kotor has always shown throughout its history that mutual respect and joint action are the strongest foundation of a prosperous community. With the conviction that in the years to come we will continue to build a society of equal opportunities and peace, I once again congratulate you on the Independence Day of Montenegro," Jokić said in his congratulatory message.

Novaković Cakan: Independence must not only be a historical fact, but also an everyday responsibility

The president of the Biram Crnu Gora - Biram Bar party, Radomir Novaković Cakan, congratulated the citizens on the great anniversary, 20 years of the restoration of Montenegro's independence.

"Two decades of renewed independence are not only a symbol of the duration of our state, but also a confirmation of the strength of the people to preserve freedom, dignity and the right to their own path of development. This anniversary obliges us to be worthy of the generations that created and defended Montenegro and to build a state of justice, knowledge, economic progress and equal opportunities for all," he stated in his congratulatory message.

Today, more than ever, independence must not only be a historical fact, but also an everyday responsibility, said Cakan.

"The responsibility to preserve democratic values, state institutions, civic harmony and the European future of Montenegro. It is our duty to overcome divisions, to put the interests of the state above personal and party interests and to together create a society of stability, security and prosperity. Let this great date remind us that the future of Montenegro is in the hands of all of us. That it is an eternal Montenegro!", he concluded.

Jakić: The decision made that May day was historic, brave and correct

The President of the Municipality of Šavnik, Jugoslav Jakić, congratulated the citizens on May 21st - the Independence Day of Montenegro.

"A decision that changed the course of our history. When Montenegro regained its independence on May 21, 2006, I was barely eighteen years old, just the age needed for a person to feel for the first time what responsibility, freedom and the desire to choose their own path mean. My generation grew up together with the renewed Montenegro. We grew up with its successes, challenges and faith that this country can be a modern, dignified and European state, based on its glorious past and facing a secure future. Today, two decades later, we know with even greater certainty that the decision made on that May day was historic, courageous and correct," Jakić said in his congratulatory message.

It was not just a political victory, he pointed out.

"It was a moment in which Montenegro regained its right to speak with its own voice, to decide on its destiny and to build its future freely and proudly. It is our obligation to preserve this freedom responsibly, not through divisions, but through unity; not through words, but through deeds; not for ourselves, but for generations to come. Throughout its history, Šavnik has always known which side it stands on when the dignity of Montenegro was defended. That is why today, with the same pride and faith, we preserve the values of a civic, anti-fascist and European Montenegro. May this anniversary remind us of the value of a state that belongs to its citizens and how important it is to remain worthy of those who created it and those to whom we leave it. Happy Independence Day! May Montenegro be eternal!", concluded Jakić.

Krivokapić: Montenegro should be fully oriented towards the welfare of all its citizens

Twenty years of Montenegro's independence are an opportunity to clearly state what we need for our country to finally become what it deserves to be, said former Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić.

"Montenegro must be a successful, economically and energy-rich, functional and modern state - fully oriented towards the welfare of all its citizens. To achieve this, those who govern it must: love Montenegro with all their being, have a sufficient level of competence and expertise, have no obligations to other countries or anyone, put the state's interest above personal, political and party interests, and witness the original values of our people and state through their example!", Krivokapić stated in a post on Iks.

Koprivica: Truly building a state that belongs equally to all of us

Momo Koprivica, Deputy Prime Minister for the Political System, Judiciary and Anti-Corruption, congratulated the citizens of Montenegro on Independence Day, expressing, as he said, the most sincere wishes that the entire society, starting from the imposing centuries-old constitutional, libertarian and moral tradition of Montenegro, increases its efforts towards achieving the historical goal, which is full membership in the EU, as the optimal framework for strengthening democratic culture, protection of rights, economic development and a sense of common belonging.

"In that sense, it is imperative that our society not be divided along old lines, but rather truly build a state that belongs equally to everyone and to which everyone is equally responsible. By striving for the common good, let us make Montenegro prosperous!" he stated in his congratulatory message.

Vuković: Montenegro determined to continue reforms and strengthen the economy

Montenegro stands strong and secure on its European path today, determined to continue reforms, strengthen the economy and preserve financial stability in the interest of all citizens, said Minister of Finance Novica Vuković.

"Our goal is not only economic development, but a state of equal opportunities, security and trust in institutions," Vuković said in his address marking the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro's independence.

He added that two decades since the restoration of independence have shown that a state is built and preserved through responsible decisions, stable institutions, and a clear vision of the future.

"Independence is not just a historical achievement, it is an everyday responsibility to create a stronger, more stable and more successful Montenegro for generations to come," said Vuković.

Šaranović: Patriotism is not about big words, but about the courage to change the country for the better

The greatest patriotism is not in big words, but in the courage to change the country for the better, said Minister of the Interior Danilo Šaranović in his congratulations on Independence Day.

"Today is the day when we as a society need to honestly look at where we are today and whether we as a society have achieved what was expected over the last 20 years. Instead of a state of equal opportunities, for too long we have lived in a system in which institutions were weak when they should have been the strongest, and the state was often subordinated to the interests of privileged individuals and centers of power. We have witnessed a dangerous combination of politics, crime and corruption that has eroded the trust of citizens, rendered institutions meaningless and undermined the foundations of the state. That is why today, twenty years later, the greatest patriotism is not in big words, but in the courage to change the state for the better. In the determination that institutions finally serve citizens, not centers of power. In the willingness to make difficult but correct decisions for the sake of a better, fairer and safer future for Montenegro," he stated.

Šaranović said that Montenegro must never again be a country in which institutions are sacrificed to organized crime, political interests and privileged structures.

"That is precisely why today we are building a system in which no one will be protected because of their position, surname, power or political connections. A system in which the law is equal for all and in which institutions finally have the strength and freedom to work in the interest of the state and citizens. I believe that history will remember this time as the moment in which Montenegro found the strength to break with the practices that were undermining its foundations and resolutely embark on the path of true democracy, European values and the full rule of law," the minister emphasized.

Montenegro today, after 20 years, is big enough for every one of its people, but too small for every mafia, he said.

"Proud enough not to kneel before anyone, but wise enough not to be anyone's prey. Old enough to remember all injustices, but young enough to build a more just future. May this Independence Day be a holiday of reconciliation, dignity and state maturity. A holiday of Montenegro that does not ask who voted for whom twenty years ago, but who works honestly for it today. Montenegro that will not be anyone's private property, but the common home of all its citizens. Montenegro is facing a great test today, to show that it can be not only independent, but also just, not only sovereign, but also organized, not only European in direction, but European in values, in laws, in responsibility and in its relationship with every person. That is Montenegro worth working for. That is Montenegro worth defending. That is Montenegro that we owe to our ancestors, citizens and generations to come," concluded Šaranović in his congratulatory message.

Raičević: At least today Montenegro is the engine of Europeanization

The millennial duration of Montenegrin statehood, which has its foundations precisely in Bar and the first Montenegrin state of Duklja, had its contemporary turning point precisely on this day in 2006, restoring the old state in a modern and civic spirit, stated the Mayor of the Municipality of Bar, Dušan Raičević, in his congratulatory message on the occasion of Independence Day.

"The contribution of Bar to such processes is of historical importance and we are strongly persevering on this path, and after 20 years of development of a civil, modern and European Montenegro, we have something to be proud of. Bar is a city in which we inherit differences, we live with each other in our diversity, and therefore Bar in its unity has the strength to be the driving force of the economic, commercial and overall social development of the country, especially contributing to its European perspective, as Montenegro's gateway to Europe, with its Port, today we are also the engine of Montenegro in Europeanization and strengthening the values of modern European societies, whose membership we aspire to", he stated.

The best witness to this, adds Raičević, is the quality of everyday life of citizens and the desirability of Bar as a place to live and stay.

"Congratulating you once again on this great anniversary, I am certain that Bar, as always, will be a reliable support for such momentum for the further development and statehood of Montenegro, and our citizens are the best guarantee of the eternity of our state. May Montenegro be eternal!", he concluded in his congratulatory message.

Nenezić: Over the next year, civic Montenegro will fight a decisive battle for its survival

The President of the Municipal Assembly of Bar, Branislav Nenezić, congratulated the citizens of Montenegro on the anniversary of the Independence Day of Montenegro, the day when, as he pointed out, Montenegro completed its thousand-year tradition of statehood and became an independent state dedicated to progressing towards a democratic and civil community of all its inhabitants.

"20 years ago, our Bar, like many times before that, was on the right and progressive side of history. Today, as then, we are dominantly and clearly determined to live in a civil society that is dedicated to the future, and not trapped in the past by various mythomaniac representations that are modified from year to year. On that day, Montenegro was a bright spot, a shining example of how social differences on political issues should be resolved both in the Balkans and in Europe. But today, precisely in the year when two decades of the restoration of statehood are celebrated, all those defeated, backward dark forces that, through various false interpretations, want to return Montenegro to the vestibule of the Balkan mud of conflict and hatred, have emerged, or rather emerged from their dark dens," Nenezić pointed out.

He pointed out that it is very important that we continue our fight that we started then.

"Our Montenegro is too beautiful, and our freedom-loving tradition is too glorious, to be bypassed by all those who want to degrade it, and we must never forget that. We should be responsible and clearly state that today the promoters of these mythomanias are precisely the people who sit in leading positions in our country and that, using the resources of Montenegro and enjoying privileges that would not exist without the referendum, they are working to make it disappear as a civil and functional state. We tell them, celebrating today, that we clearly recognize them, that we know who they are, and that their perfidious games will not pass without our, as always, courageous and dignified response," said the president of the Bar Municipal Assembly.

He added that he is deeply convinced that over the next year, civic Montenegro is fighting a decisive battle for its survival and that two decades ago was not the end of that struggle, but the beginning.

"If we want our children to grow up in a modern Montenegro, Montenegro as part of the family of European developed countries, we must find the strength to return to the dustbin of history all those who celebrate war criminals, who glorify violence and who distort historical facts. And that is why I will repeat, as in previous years, that our glorious history is woven from victories from Tuđemil, through Fundina, Vučji do and Grahovac, and that it obliges us to be worthy citizens of our Montenegro as a symbol of freedom and justice. That Montenegro is eternal!", concluded Nenezić.

Đeljošaj: Let's continue to build a strong, modern and economically stable Montenegro

On the occasion of May 21st - Independence Day, Nik Đeljošaj, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy and Minister of Economic Development, sent his congratulations to the citizens.

"This significant date obliges us to continue building a strong, modern and economically stable Montenegro, a state with a strong economy, multiethnic harmony, unity and European values. Our goal remains to stimulate economic growth, support domestic production, create new jobs and create a better standard of living for all citizens. I am convinced that by working together we will continue on the path to a European future and further economic progress. Happy Independence Day of Montenegro!", Đeljošaj said in his congratulatory message.

Krapović: Today we should not celebrate anyone's victory over anyone, but the responsibility of all of us before Montenegro

Independence Day is not a day of one party and one government, it is a day in which one should not celebrate anyone's victory over anyone, but rather the responsibility of all of us before Montenegro, said Minister of Defense Dragan Krapović.

He sent his congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro on Independence Day, the day when Montenegro's independence was restored 20 years ago.

"For years, they convinced us that without them, the former government, there would be no Montenegro. That every criticism of the government is an attack on the state. That every change is a danger. That anyone who thinks differently is less valuable, less loyal and less called to serve their country. And then time showed what the people had long felt, that Montenegro did not depend on them. They depended on a captive Montenegro. Today, Montenegro is walking more freely. The government is replaceable. The voter is freer. Institutions are, difficult but decisively, returning to their true role. The security sector must no longer be anyone's political shield, but the bulwark of the state against organized crime, corruption and every attempt to subordinate the public interest to the private and personal," he stated.

"We, the citizens of Montenegro, cannot talk about a just state in which honest people were silent and the privileged made decisions, because Independence Day is not the day of one party, one government, one generation, or one percent," Krapović added.

The Minister of Defense emphasized that Independence Day is the day of the state.

"The Day of our Common Home. A day when we should not celebrate anyone's victory over anyone, but the responsibility of all of us before Montenegro. Independence only makes sense if it is fair to every person. If it belongs equally to those who voted for independence in 2006 and to those who voted for a common state, because both are citizens of Montenegro, because both have the right to love, build, represent and defend it. The defense sector has a significant role in this field and therefore we will continue to contribute to the additional strengthening of the institutional framework and the intensive reform process on the domestic level in order to make Montenegro ready for membership in the European family to which we have always belonged. Especially today, with pride and respect, we think of the Army of Montenegro, of all our soldiers, non-commissioned officers, officers and civilians in the defense service, who daily, quietly, with dignity and honor guard the security of our country, and I take this opportunity to wish them a happy return to their families and that they continue to represent their country with dignity," the statement reads. Krapović's greeting card.

He emphasized that the Army of Montenegro will remain a key pillar of the defense of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the state and a support for the civilian sector in situations that require it of us.

"In addition, by participating in international missions, operations and activities, we will continuously justify the status of a reliable NATO ally and a factor of regional stability. Because the Army of Montenegro is not the army of any party, any policy or any individual. It is the army of the state, the people, the Constitution and freedom. It is a symbol of sovereignty, security and seriousness of an independent country. Therefore, it is our obligation to strengthen the Army of Montenegro as a professional, modern, dignified and European institution, free from any party pressures, personal interests and inherited weaknesses," he emphasized.

We have a great obligation ahead of us, added Krapović, the obligation of our generation to return Independence Day to its rightful place, to return it to the citizens, institutions, the Army, the flag, and the future.

"We will continue to strengthen national capabilities through the initiated process of intensive modernization of the defense sector and improvement of the standards of employees in the Army. Our vision is clear, to make Montenegro, with joint forces, a state that fully inherits the values of togetherness, tolerance and mutual respect of all its citizens. Therefore, on behalf of the Ministry of Defense and on my own behalf, I wish all citizens of Montenegro, employees of the Ministry of Defense and the Army of Montenegro, a happy Independence Day with a special message that I want to send to our children. Be proud sons and daughters of your homeland, preserve your roots, language and tradition, everything that has sustained us through the centuries. Carry Montenegro in your heart wherever life takes you and may your every success be a source of pride for your family and your country. Whatever path you take tomorrow and whatever calling you choose, perform it honorably, with dignity and responsibility, serving your people and the future of our country, our Montenegro. Long live Montenegro!", concluded Krapović.

Šćepanović: Montenegro has been a beacon of freedom throughout the centuries

Director of the Police Administration Lazar Šćepanović congratulated citizens on the occasion of 20 years since the restoration of Montenegro's independence.

"Montenegro is not just a symbol of freedom - it has been its beacon, guiding star and spark of resistance throughout the centuries that illuminated even the most difficult times. Montenegro has always known how to preserve what is most valuable - the right of man to live freely, honor and dignity," he stated.

Šćepanović said that our people have fought many battles to preserve their state, name and existence, and that new obligations and challenges lie ahead of us - to preserve peace, stability, justice and the security of all our citizens with the same determination.

"The fight we are now waging is not just for us, but a pledge for the future, for our children and future generations, for their safer upbringing and a more just society. The Police Directorate will, in the time ahead, remain strongly committed to protecting the constitutional order of Montenegro, the safety of all citizens, and preserving the peace and stability of our state. Convinced that together we will continue to build a safer, more secure and more just future for all citizens, I congratulate you on May 21, the Independence Day of Montenegro, and the great jubilee - 20 years since the restoration of independence," concluded Šćepanović.

Ćulafić: Together we can bring the EU accession process to an end

Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of May 21st - Independence Day of Montenegro, to all citizens, with the wish that the country continues to develop on the foundations of unity, responsibility, peace and respect for man and nature.

"This year is special because we are also celebrating another significant anniversary - thirty-five years since Montenegro was declared an ecological state," emphasized Ćulafić.

He emphasized that the development of the country today, more than ever, must be focused not only on economic progress, but also on a responsible attitude towards natural resources.

"It is important how we treat our rivers and forests, where we dispose of waste, how much time we spend in nature and whether we know how to hear the messages it sends us, because preserving the environment, no matter how many times it is repeated, is the common responsibility of all of us," said Ćulafić.

Speaking about Montenegro's European path, the minister said that the country has made significant progress and is close to the final phase of the negotiation process.

"Just as we have gathered many times throughout history around common goals, I believe that we will unite around this European goal. Together we can bring the process to an end and, with pride, as a sovereign and ecological state, become a full member of the European family of nations," said the minister.

"On behalf of the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development and on my own behalf, I once again congratulate all citizens on May 21st - Independence Day of Montenegro," said Ćulafić.

Borovinić Bojović: Continue Montenegro's European path

The President of the Capital City Assembly, Jelena Borovinić Bojović, congratulated all citizens on May 21st - Independence Day of Montenegro, with the wish that this date would remind us of the values of togetherness, mutual respect and responsibility towards the future of our country and all its citizens.

"Today, when Montenegro is at an important stage of its European path, more than ever we need understanding, dialogue and joint work on issues that determine the future of generations to come. Our strength lies in the ability, despite our differences, to build a society of equal opportunities, strong institutions and a stable European perspective. Montenegro has always belonged to the European cultural and value space, and I believe that it is precisely through unity, responsibility and commitment to the common good that we can achieve the vision of a modern, prosperous and European Montenegro," Borovinić Bojović stated in her congratulatory message.

She emphasized that we proudly bear witness to the fact that it is almost certain that our country has the opportunity to be the first member of the European Union.

"Which is a success that transcends political differences and represents a shared responsibility of all social actors. That is why it is important that we continue our European path in the spirit of dialogue, mutual respect and shared commitment to the interests of the state and all our citizens. May the Independence Day of Montenegro remind us that freedom, dignity, solidarity and shared responsibility are the foundations on which we build a secure and European future for all citizens," she said.

Clinical Center: Let's all celebrate this important anniversary with dignity

The Clinical Center of Montenegro congratulated the citizens of Montenegro on Independence Day.

"On the occasion of twenty years since the restoration of independence, we want everyone to celebrate this important anniversary with dignity, in good health and a cheerful mood. This is an opportunity for all of us to look back on what has been achieved, thank everyone who has contributed to strengthening the Montenegrin healthcare system and society as a whole, and look with optimism to the future we are building together. May love for the homeland, unity and mutual respect continue to lead us towards progress and a better life for all citizens of Montenegro. In honor of the anniversary, 20 years since the restoration of independence, the management of the KCCG will donate precious fluid on Monday, May 25, at the Blood Transfusion Institute. Happy Independence Day!", the greeting reads.

SEP: No one can dispute our country and its stability.

The Party of European Progress congratulated the citizens on what they said was the greatest holiday in recent Montenegrin history.

"Today is a great day for Montenegro, a state of a thousand years of existence, the highest spark around which we gather. No one can dispute our country and its steadfastness, while its citizens are on all four sides of the world, within its borders and in its diaspora. The entire two decades since the restoration of independence, but also the festive togetherness that we feel all these days - encourage us to live in harmony, to create and build, leaving differences aside, and working for the benefit of the European future of our society. Happy Independence Day," the greeting reads.

Dukaj: Let us decisively build a state with strong institutions

Twenty years of renewed independence is not just a jubilee - it is a confirmation of the durability of our state will, the strength of our unity and responsibility towards future generations, said Minister of Public Administration Maraš Dukaj in his congratulations on the occasion of Independence Day.

He said that Independence Day reminds us that freedom is not taken for granted - it is preserved through knowledge, work, dignity and faith in one's country.

"Our obligation today is not only to celebrate what we have achieved, but to resolutely build a state of strong institutions, justice, responsibility and trust. A strong state is created when every individual feels that they belong, that they are respected and that their work contributes to common progress. That is why we continue to build a modern, efficient and transparent system of public administration - an administration that serves citizens and is the pillar of Montenegro's European future," he said.

The strategic goal remains clear, says Dukaj.

"Montenegro as a full member of the European Union, a well-organized state with stable institutions and a society that gives young people a reason to build their future right here. I am convinced that through joint work, responsible action and unwavering faith in the values of freedom, democracy and solidarity, we will continue to strengthen our country and create a prosperous future for all citizens. On behalf of the Ministry of Public Administration and on my own behalf, I extend my sincere congratulations on the occasion of the Independence Day of Montenegro," the greeting reads.

Petković: The homeland is defended with beauty

Andrija Petković, president of the Boka Forum, congratulated on Independence Day and said that "the homeland is defended with beauty."

"In some old textbooks, among other things, there is a beautiful poem by Ljubivoje Ršumović that says: 'The homeland is defended with beauty, honor, and knowledge, the homeland is defended with life and good upbringing.' That textbook has long been missing from educational programs. Neither upbringing nor knowledge are at a special level, and some old oaths have been forgotten," he said.

Petković said that on today, the twentieth anniversary of our homeland of Montenegro, it is worth recalling that on May 21, 2006, there was talk of a state based on the rule of law, equality, a civil and free Montenegro.

"And that was quickly forgotten — both by the then and current holders of political power. As the popular saying goes, only the pigs have changed, and the trough has remained the same. However, we must believe that Montenegro, as it was in the vision of all honorable and sincere people — a civic Montenegro that protects the dignity of every human being — will ultimately be the measure of all things. With such hope, I wish all citizens of Montenegro, on behalf of the Boka Forum and on my own behalf, a happy twentieth anniversary of the restoration of Montenegrin statehood. If we have forgotten everything else, let us not forget that the homeland is always defended with beauty," he concluded.

Camaj: The Albanian people made a significant and recognizable contribution to the restoration of independence

Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro Nikola Camaj congratulated May 21st - Independence Day of Montenegro, emphasizing that this anniversary, 20 years since the restoration of independence, is a reminder of the unity, determination and democratic will of citizens.

He emphasized that this process was an expression of the common will and responsibility of all citizens, and that the Albanian people made a significant and recognizable contribution to the restoration of independence, confirming their commitment to multiethnic harmony, civic values, and Montenegro's European path.

Camaj pointed out that significant progress has been made in the past two decades, but that society still has obligations to further strengthen institutions, the rule of law, and economic development, while preserving mutual trust and equality among all peoples.

He said that it is everyone's duty to preserve and advance the achievements of independence, building a stable and just society for future generations.

With his congratulatory message, he wished all citizens of Montenegro peace, prosperity and success. Happy May 21st – Independence Day of Montenegro!

Perić: Montenegro is a common home for all its citizens

Srđan Perić, leader of the Preokret movement, congratulated all citizens of Montenegro on May 21st - Montenegro's Independence Day.

"Twenty years since the restoration of independence, or the restoration of international legal subjectivity, is an anniversary that points us to a significant turning point in the modern history of our state. It is important to recall that in the referendum held on May 21, 2006, both those who voted "YES" and those who voted "NO" made the referendum valid through their participation. Recognizing this fact is the foundation on which a culture of dialogue and mutual respect must be built," he stated in his congratulatory message.

Perić reminded that every anniversary is also an obligation to look at what has been done, to recognize what needs to be improved, what problems we must overcome, but also what has been missed, because this is precisely the path towards a sustainable community that learns from its own experience.

"Independence Day is a reminder that Montenegro is the common home of all its citizens, who have the right to demand responsibility, respect and constant work for a better society. On behalf of the Preokret Movement and on my own behalf, I once again congratulate all citizens on May 21st - Montenegro's Independence Day," concluded Perić.

CCE: Loving Montenegro means taking care of each other

This was announced by the Center for Civic Education (CCE).

"Montenegro is a country to which even the sky belongs differently. Under this blue sky, among these mountains and by this sea, there is beauty that deserves to last. But no beauty survives alone - it seeks people who will carry it, refine it and love it. It is our obligation to cherish our roots and take care of our, small but great, Montenegro, built on the karst, the toil and sweat of generations that did not agree to humiliation or submission. Therefore, we must not forget that freedom and independence are not understood or inherited as permanent security, but are preserved through responsibility, solidarity and everyday care for the common good," the CCE statement states.

They say that loving Montenegro means taking care of each other.

"This means that we do not ask ourselves who is of what religion, nation or origin, because Montenegro is not the sum of our differences, but the community of our diversities. It belongs to all well-intentioned and free-thinking people, those who know how to praise and criticize, because they want the best for their country. May the next anniversary come to us without the need for big words and special inspiration - in Montenegro, which is an orderly, just and safe state, in which a dignified life is taken for granted, and joy is not experienced as an exception. May it be a Montenegro that no one will dispute, in which we will trust each other, our institutions and our future, and what unites us will be stronger than what divides us," the congratulatory message concludes.

Šimun: A reminder of the values of togetherness, responsibility and perseverance

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the restoration of Montenegro's independence, the Ministry of Health sent sincere congratulations to all citizens, with respect, as they state, for the historic decision that confirmed the democratic will for the restoration of Montenegrin statehood.

This significant anniversary is an opportunity to further strengthen our commitment to building a modern, responsible and solidary state, in which the health and quality of life of citizens are among the most important social priorities, said the Ministry of Health.

On this occasion, the Minister of Health, Vojislav Šimun, sent his heartfelt congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro.

"On the occasion of Independence Day, I extend my sincere congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro, with the hope that this great anniversary will be a reminder of the values of togetherness, responsibility and perseverance on which we build our country. Guided by the belief that health is the most valuable resource of every society, we will continue to work dedicatedly to further improve the healthcare system, with the clear goal of providing every citizen with quality, accessible and efficient healthcare. Investing in people's health remains one of our most important commitments and the foundation of overall social progress," said Šimun.

To mark this significant anniversary, healthcare institutions across Montenegro are organizing numerous preventive and educational activities, confirming in a symbolic and meaningful way the healthcare system's commitment to preserving and improving the health of the population.

GI 21 May: We have decisive years ahead on the path to the EU

The civic initiative "21. May" congratulated the citizens of Montenegro on Independence Day with the message that our country and our society can only be better if citizens think critically and reasonably, work diligently and creatively, act unitedly and humanely, educate themselves daily and do not accept being the pawns of nationalistic and provincial policies, subjects of political parties and spineless flocks of religious communities.

"We have decisive years ahead of us on the path to the European Union, and therefore every social action that will advocate for an integralist state policy and responsible political leadership that is ready to selflessly dedicate itself to the future and well-being of a civil, just, democratic, solidary and secular Montenegro is patriotic," the congratulatory message states.

Gutić: That issues of national interest should be above all divisions

Minister of Social Welfare, Family Care and Demography Damir Gutić congratulated all citizens of Montenegro and the diaspora on May 21 - Independence Day, believing that marking two decades of renewed independence represents an opportunity to even more strongly confirm our commitment to a European, democratic and civic Montenegro.

"Twenty years since the restoration of independence confirms that Montenegro has been able to preserve peace, multiethnic harmony and stability, despite numerous challenges and times of political and social change. Today, we have an obligation to further strengthen trust among citizens and build a society based on responsibility, dialogue and a shared vision of the future," he said in his congratulatory message.

Gutić said that he believes that Montenegro's European path is a natural continuation of the values that citizens supported with the restoration of independence, and that unity and political stability are key prerequisites for the further development of our country.

"Montenegro can only progress as a state of all its citizens, oriented towards European values, mutual respect and strengthening of institutions. That is precisely why it is important that issues of national interest are above all divisions and that we work together to create a safer and more prosperous future for generations to come. In the spirit of unity and responsibility towards the state that we are building together, I once again congratulate you on Independence Day, with the wish that Montenegro continues on the path of stability, progress and full membership in the European Union," he concluded in a statement.

Bogdanović: Let Montenegro's holiday be a day of deep national harmony

Independence was not completed on the day it was restored. It is confirmed every day, in the strength of the law, in the freedom of man to live without fear, in the certainty that the state is no one's prey and no one's private property.

This was said by Boris Bogdanović, president of the Democratic Party's parliamentary group and secretary general, in a congratulatory message on the occasion of Independence Day.

"Independence Day must not be a day of outvoting, as the three-decade clique wants to present it. It is the day when Montenegro, before history and before itself, took on the responsibility to carry its own name, its borders, its freedom and its destiny. That is why this is a holiday that must not be cramped for any of its people. It belongs both to those who believed at the time that an independent Montenegro was the natural path to its dignity, and to those who sincerely thought that a common state was a better framework for its peace and its future. Because serious states do not divide their children according to how they voted in a historical moment. They bring them together according to how ready they are to love, respect, build and defend it," he stated.

Montenegro, as Bogdanović said, survived centuries not because everyone in it thought the same, but because in crucial moments it knew how to be greater than its differences.

"It was not sustained by unanimity. It was sustained by the awareness that there are values that must not be compromised even when people argue about the paths they should take," he pointed out.

Bogdanović said that a country is truly its own only when no individual is greater than it.

"When no one of its houses is stronger than justice. When no group is more powerful than the law. When no citizen has to lower his gaze before force, injustice or party. That is why love for Montenegro is not in a bank, in anyone's house, in a private company. It is in measure. In work. In honesty. In the readiness to protect public property as sacred, not as booty. Therefore, let the holiday of Montenegro be a day of deep national harmony. A day when we will remember that the homeland is not loved by appropriating it, but by loving it with respect. That freedom is not the right of the stronger, but the right of every one of its citizens. That sovereignty is not a word for the podium, but an obligation before every person who wants to live in an orderly, peaceful and upright country. Happy Independence Day to all citizens of Montenegro," he concluded.

Ibrahimovic: See you in the European Union

Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ervin Ibrahimović sent a congratulatory message on the occasion of May 21st - Independence Day to all citizens of Montenegro and the diaspora, emphasizing the importance of the anniversary - 20 years since the restoration of independence.

Ibrahimović said that this anniversary is not only a reminder of the historic decision of a generation, but also an opportunity to recognize all those who believed in a free, civil, dignified and European Montenegro.

"Our independence was not a goal in itself - it was the beginning of the path of building a state based on peace, multiethnic harmony, democracy and responsibility towards every person," Ibrahimović stated.

Speaking about the results achieved, he emphasized that Montenegro is today an internationally recognized and reliable ally, a member of NATO, and a country that is resolutely moving towards full membership in the European Union.

As he said, there is reason for pride, but also an obligation to build Montenegro even stronger as a civil, prosperous and European state.

"Our European future is not just a political goal - it is a natural expression of the values we share and the society we aspire to, the state we dreamed of when we regained our independence: fairer and safer for all citizens, regardless of their commitment on that 21st of May. In the spirit of unity and faith in Montenegro, I congratulate you on Independence Day - may the coming years connect us even more strongly, in unity, dignity and shared progress. See you in the European Union," Ibrahimović concluded.

Bečić: The greatest patriotism today is to fight for Montenegro, in which no one will be above the state and above the law

Montenegro is eternal to the extent that it is free, just and pure, said Deputy Prime Minister for Security, Defense, Fight against Crime and Internal Policy Aleksa Bečić, adding that the greatest patriotism today is to fight for Montenegro, in which no one will be above the state and above the law.

"For twenty years, Montenegro has been waging the same struggle, to preserve the meaning of its independence from those who wanted to privatize both the state and its dates. That citizens, instead of the state, celebrate parties. Instead of institutions, clans. Instead of honesty, privileged individuals who lived as if Montenegro was their inheritance, and not the common home of all its citizens. They wanted every holiday not to be a holiday of free people, but the monopoly of one political structure. That independence does not mean a free and just state, but their untouchable zone of power without control, without responsibility and without justice. That smuggling, corruption, persecution and ties to organized crime are hidden under the flag of Montenegro. That patriotism serves as a smokescreen behind which factories, millions and the future of entire generations will disappear," Bečić stated in his congratulatory message.

But they failed, he added, because Montenegro is nobody's property.

"It is neither a private state nor a private date. It belongs to every person who loves it honestly, honorably and sincerely, regardless of political, national or any other affiliation. It belongs to every citizen who respects its laws, its institutions and its freedom. That is why today we must clearly say that Montenegro truly began to regain its dignity when it set out to free itself from those who captured it. When the state began to return to the people. When institutions began to serve citizens, not privileged individuals and criminal structures. When the fight against the mafia and corruption became a matter of the state's honor, not political marketing," Bečić's congratulatory message reads.

There is no independent state where crime has ruled the institutions, the Deputy Prime Minister points out.

"Where clans were stronger than the law, and division and quarreling of people was the pattern of functioning. And that is why the greatest patriotism today is to fight for a Montenegro in which no one will be above the state and above the law. And especially to never again repeat the time in which citizens were divided into suitable and unsuitable. The time in which it was said that those who voted for the state union should not represent Montenegro in the diplomacy and institutions of their country. That was not the strength of independent Montenegro. That was the weakness of those who did not understand that the state is not party spoils, but the common home of all its citizens," he states.

Therefore, let Independence Day be a vow of dignity and democratic maturity, says Bečić.

"A vow that Montenegro will never again be a hostage to any party, family, ideology or criminal clan. And that it will be represented by the best among us, not the most suitable. We have shown that independence does not belong to anyone individually. It does not belong to 55 or 45% of its population. It belongs to Montenegro and to every one of its people who make it what it is. The most beautiful country in the world. Because Montenegro is eternal to the extent that it is free, just and pure. Long live our mother, the only homeland, cradle and grave. May Montenegro be eternally upright, dignified and European! Happy Independence Day!", he concluded.

Nimanbegu: May 21st determined the modern identity of Montenegro

The President of the Municipality of Ulcinj, Genci Nimanbegu, said that May 21 is not just a historical date, but also a key political and social moment that determined the institutional development and modern identity of Montenegro. The 2006 decision paved the way for building independent policies, strengthening international subjectivity and directing development in accordance with Western democratic standards, he said in a congratulatory message to citizens on the occasion of Independence Day.

"Twenty years ago, through a democratic referendum - with special conditions and a high threshold of 55% for its validity - citizens clearly opted for state independence. This historic decision set Montenegro's path towards full independence, marking one of the final acts of the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and the building of a civil state, aimed at Euro-Atlantic integration," Nimanbegu stated.

After two decades of independence, he added, it is necessary to view this anniversary not only symbolically, but also as an opportunity to realistically consider political, economic and institutional developments.

"Significant results have been achieved, but challenges remain - especially in the areas of economic development, the functionality of institutions and citizens' trust in the system. NATO membership in 2017 represents one of the most important strategic achievements, guaranteeing the stability and long-term security of the country. At the same time, integration into the European Union remains a key national goal, although the pace of reforms has not always been in line with the expectations of citizens and international partners. In this regard, strengthening the rule of law, ensuring the real independence of institutions, an uncompromising fight against corruption and organized crime, as well as improving human rights are essential. A democratic state cannot function without reliable institutions and real equality for all its citizens," said Nimanbegu.

He particularly emphasized the role of minority peoples in the state-building processes of Montenegro.

"Albanians in Montenegro made a decisive contribution to the process of restoring independence, as some of the strongest supporters of the Euro-Atlantic orientation and the concept of a multiethnic, democratic and inclusive state. This contribution is not only historical, but is still present today through active participation in the development of society. However, there are still open issues that require a more serious institutional approach - especially in the area of balanced regional development, proportional representation, real decentralization and improving the economic and social living conditions of citizens. Youth departure, development inequalities and living standards remain challenges that require concrete and long-term policies. As political representatives, we remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions, preserving interethnic harmony and improving the integration processes of Montenegro. Political responsibility today is not measured in words, but in concrete results in improving the lives of citizens," concluded Nimanbegu.

AMU: To advance the values on which a modern democratic society is based

The celebration of two decades since the restoration of independence is an opportunity to recall one of the most significant dates in contemporary Montenegrin history. This anniversary also confirms the importance of preserving and promoting the values on which a modern democratic society is based - dialogue, tolerance, mutual respect, responsibility and solidarity.

This was announced in a congratulatory message on the occasion of Independence Day by the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services (AMU),

"In the coming period, AMU will continue, within its competence, to contribute to strengthening professional standards, media pluralism, and an informed and responsible public space. Happy Independence Day!", the greeting reads.

Nurković: Minority peoples among key bearers of the idea of an independent Montenegro

As the Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro from among the minority peoples, Mirsad Nurković said that he has a special role as the Vice President of the Parliament of Montenegro from among the minority peoples.

"In doing so, they have shown a high level of responsibility towards the state they perceive as their homeland, but also a lasting commitment to the values of freedom, anti-fascism, peace and togetherness," he said in his Independence Day greeting.

"Twenty years after the historic referendum, we are particularly proud to point out that minority peoples were among the key bearers of the idea of an independent, civic and European Montenegro. Their support for the restoration of independence was not just a political commitment, but a deeply expressed faith in a state of equal rights, mutual respect and a shared future," said Nurković, congratulating all citizens on the holiday.

Nurković emphasized that the historic decision of May 21st remains a lasting testament to the political maturity of the citizens of Montenegro and confirmation that diversity is our greatest asset, not division.

"It was precisely togetherness, trust and a sense of belonging to the state that were the foundation on which modern Montenegro was restored. Today, when we celebrate a great jubilee - 20 years of independence, the obligation of all of us is to further strengthen the civic character of the state, its democratic institutions and the European path, preserving the values on which independence was restored. Let this date permanently remind us that a free and independent Montenegro is the greatest common victory of all its citizens. Happy May 21st - Independence Day of Montenegro! YES, for a civic, dignified and European Montenegro that we love!", stated the Deputy Speaker of the Parliament.

Matica Crnogorska: We are faced with serious social and institutional challenges that require additional responsibility from all social actors

On the occasion of May 21, Independence Day, Matica Crnogorska sends sincere congratulations to all citizens of Montenegro, as well as to our emigrants around the world, with the wish that we mark this great national jubilee with dignity, aware of its historical importance and the responsibility it carries for the future of our country, Matica Crnogorska announced.

"Twenty years since the restoration of independence is not only a reminder of the magnificent referendum on May 21, 2006, but also an opportunity to see how much that historic act changed the political, cultural and social face of Montenegro. The referendum 'YES' marked the full return of Montenegro's state and national dignity, confirming its right to independently decide on its own development and European future," the statement emphasizes.

Matica Crnogorska added that "today, two decades later, we are faced with serious social and institutional challenges that require additional responsibility from all social actors."

"We are witnessing attempts to relativize the fundamental values of contemporary Montenegro - its civic character, anti-fascist heritage, cultural identity, historical continuity of statehood, as well as the open negation of the identity of the Montenegrin people. Therefore, the anniversary of the restoration of independence must be more than a celebration; it must be a moment of national self-knowledge and a demand aimed at defending state integrity and sovereignty," the statement reads.

The Matica Crnogorska Foundation said that the institution remains convinced that Montenegro can only progress as a democratic, civil and European state in which the values defined by the Constitution will be protected.

"In a time of strong political and identity polarization, it is particularly important to preserve social cohesion, mutual respect and faith in European values, which were one of the key motives for the restoration of independence. Our obligation to the generations that created and defended Montenegro is to preserve its dignity, its institutions and its culture, but also to leave a well-ordered, free and prosperous state to future generations. That is precisely why the jubilee of twenty years of independence should be an incentive for a new social dialogue, the renewal of trust in institutions and a stronger affirmation of Montenegrin cultural and state identity in the European context," said Matica Crnogorska.

They announced that Matica Crnogorska will "consistently with its mission, continue to affirm the values on which modern Montenegro is based, convinced that as a society we are mature enough to respect our own history and identity based on the achievements of May 21, 2006, which is a guarantee of a prosperous future."

"Happy Independence Day of Montenegro," concludes the statement from Matica Crnogorska.

The historic date, it added, symbolizes freedom and progress, values that we deeply respect.

"We want Montenegro to continue its path towards prosperity and well-being, remaining a country of peace, unity and open opportunities for all who reside in it and contribute to its development," reads the congratulatory message from the Religious Community of Jews of Montenegro.

Mustafić: Confirmation that the Bosniak people, regardless of everything that happened in the past, look to the future open to cooperation and togetherness

Montenegro's Independence Day, May 21, is the most important date in the recent history of Montenegro, when the decision of the citizens, democratically, in a referendum, laid the foundation for its democratic development and Euro-Atlantic future. The Bosniak Council (BV) in Montenegro announced.

The Bosniak Council in Montenegro congratulated all citizens, both in the country and abroad, on May 21st, Independence Day.

"Montenegro's Independence Day, May 21, represents the most important date in the recent history of our country, when the decision of the citizens, democratically, in a referendum, laid the foundation for its democratic development and Euro-Atlantic future," said BV President Suljo Mustafić.

He said that twenty years ago, our bazaars shone with the May dawn, deciding by plebiscite to return independence to the homeland of Montenegro.

"That decision, of which we are very proud, was a confirmation that the Bosniak people, here and in the diaspora, love and feel Montenegro as their own and that, regardless of everything that happened in the past, they look to the future open to cooperation and togetherness," said Mustafić.

He assessed that after 20 years since the restoration of independence, it can be concluded that the beautiful framework of this mosaic of a multiethnic and multicultural society has not yet been filled with the promised and expected contents, but also that the Bosniak people will not give up.

"Despite all the challenges, we do not give up on the values of civil society - freedom, justice and equality, because they are part of our national being. Montenegro is our country, as well as that of all others who love it, respect it and want to make their full contribution to making it more orderly, stronger, safer and more prosperous for every individual," added Mustafić.

According to him, the primary goal of the Bosniak people is a society of freedom, peace, security, justice and equality that respects and nurtures the cultural and linguistic differences, traditions and national identities of all peoples, through the institutional implementation of official policies in education, culture and the balanced development of all municipalities and regions.

Mustafić believes that much more work is needed to improve society, both in the socio-economic and social spheres, and in building permanent mechanisms for the full inclusion of minority peoples and their presence in institutions and decision-making positions.

"We must create a society of equal opportunities and full respect for diversity, because only such a Montenegro can be a stable and democratic state with a certain European future. On behalf of the Bosniak Council, we congratulate all citizens of Montenegro, both in the country and abroad, on May 21st - Independence Day," said Mustafić.
