Bijelo Polje: Locals of the Zaton Local Community discovered tombstones while cleaning a cemetery, they say they will not allow the site to be destroyed

In the campaign to clean up the old Muslim cemetery - the graveyard at the "Klina" site, which belongs to the Zaton Local Community, residents of several Bijelo Polje settlements, including Zaton, Brzava, Pašića Polje, Prijelozi and Brestovik, discovered old tombstones - nišan.

The cemetery, as they told Vijesti, is part of the plot on which the construction of the Regional Waste Management Center for Northern Montenegro is planned, the construction of which they strongly oppose.

They have organized several protests so far, and one of the local representatives, Mujo Vreva, left his position as director of the Logistics Department in the Municipality, and then all positions in the Social Democratic Party of Socialists (SDP), after the Municipality voted to build the aforementioned center at that location.

More than 1.000 citizens signed a petition and submitted an initiative to the Bijelo Polje Municipal Assembly, demanding that the location be moved.

They oppose the planned construction of the Regional Waste Management Center, stating that the project would destroy the environment and endanger nearby properties, the Lim River, and the village bridge.

"We are also sending a message that we will not allow the destruction of the site and that the cemetery will be protected," said Vreva, adding that the discovered monuments most likely belong to the old type of nišan in the form of a stone slab, the upper part of which ends with a classic carved elevation.

"Some of them have old inscriptions - epitaphs," said Vreva.

They will inform representatives of the Government and Municipality, the Institute for the Protection of Monuments, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Embassy of Turkey, the Reis of the Islamic Community Rifat Fejzić, representatives of the authorities in order to protect this site, as well as Metropolitan Metodije of Budimlje-Niksic, given that the site is located on the territory of that eparchy and not far from the Church of Saint Thomas on Brzava.
