More than five thousand plastic bottles and cans were collected in an action organized by the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) on June 5th on the occasion of World Environment Day, the government department announced.
MERS stated that over 500 seedlings were distributed to citizens during the campaign.
They said that the action, which is a continuation of the "Green Renewal of Montenegro" campaign, was held in the University Park of Montenegro, where citizens had the opportunity to exchange ten plastic bottles or cans for one seedling.
The statement states that the collected waste was taken over by the Podgorica Landfill.
"The event was given special value by the large number of participants from different generations. The youngest citizens, students who came in an organized manner with their teachers, students, young people, families, but also senior citizens joined the action, confirming that caring for the environment knows no generational boundaries and that protecting nature is a shared responsibility of all of us," the statement says.
Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić said that such activities represent a good example of how joint action can contribute to a more responsible attitude towards the environment.
He emphasized that waste should end up in locations designated for its disposal and treatment.
According to Ćulafić, the goal of such actions is not only to collect waste, but also to encourage citizens to develop habits that contribute to environmental preservation and reducing negative impacts on nature.
MERS said that, due to the great interest of citizens and the achieved results, they plan to continue the campaign in other cities throughout Montenegro.
"The goal is to enable as many citizens as possible to participate in similar initiatives that promote recycling, responsible waste management and environmental protection," MERS said.
They thanked all citizens, pupils, students, volunteers, partners and institutions, whose participation contributed to the successful implementation of the action and the celebration of World Environment Day.
