At least erect a monument to Njegoš: Proposal by NSD councilor Branimir Lakićević

The Municipality of Bar plans to erect a monument to Petar II Petrović Njegoš by the end of 2027 in order to symbolically and permanently preserve the memories of one of the most significant figures in Montenegrin history, particularly responsible for the state, social, economic and cultural development of Montenegro.

This stems from the Program for the erection of a memorial to Petar II Petrović Njegoš, which "Vijesti" has access to, and which will be presented at the next session of the local assembly.

The idea to erect a monument to Njegoš in Bar came from a councilor of the New Serbian Democracy party. Branimir Lakićević who submitted an amendment to the 2026 Bar Municipality budget at the end of last year, requesting that funds for this project be included in it, which the Municipal Assembly (MA) adopted.

In the document proposed by the head of the Bar Municipal Council Branislav Nenezić, it states that it establishes a memorial that will be erected on the territory of the municipality of Bar, with the aim of permanently commemorating a figure of exceptional importance to Montenegrin history, culture and statehood.

In accordance with Article 1 of the Law on Memorials, memorials permanently commemorate significant events, preserve memories of prominent figures, cherish human ideals and cultural and historical traditions, and pay tribute to freedom fighters, civilian victims of war, and mass human suffering.

This act also stipulates that the type of memorial that will be erected to Petar II Petrović Njegoš is a memorial object, a monument, which will be erected by the Municipality of Bar and provide funds for it.

The deadline for erecting the monument is December 31, 2027, and the assessment and selection of the architectural and artistic design of the memorial will be carried out by an expert commission formed by the Mayor of the Municipality of Bar.

The local government will also have the obligation to maintain the memorial, and a special decision will be made in accordance with the law regarding the construction of this monument.

The reasons for adopting the Program state that at the beginning of February this year, the Municipality of Bar submitted a proposal for the Program for the erection of memorials to the competent Ministry of Culture and Media in order to obtain approval, which they received.
