Yesterday, at a ceremonial promotion, the Tivat City Library and the Municipality of Tivat presented the new monograph "Tivat", a major publication on which a group of authors worked for two years under the editorial leadership of the director of the Tivat City Library, Vesna Barbić.
The Mayor of Tivat, Željko Komnenović, addressed those present in the multimedia hall of the local government building, expressing his satisfaction that the city is receiving a new monograph after more than four decades. He emphasized that it represents a lasting testimony to Tivat and its people.
"I believe that the Tivat monograph will be everything we intended it to be: a reliable source of knowledge, a lasting document of time, and a precious testimony for generations to come. Because cities last as long as the word about them lasts," Komnenović emphasized.
The director of the Tivat City Library and the editor of the publication, Vesna Barbić, presented the idea and process of creating the monograph, recalling that this is one of the first major publishing ventures of the youngest cultural institution in the city.
"A city that had been slumbering for fifty years, tucked away in an endlessly repetitive everyday life, and then woke up and began a miraculous transformation, which was continuous and intense even during the work on this monograph, resisted any definitive description. That is precisely why I hope that this edition will be an incentive for all who wish to research, reflect and create new works about Tivat," said Barbić.
After the address, the Mayor and the Library Director presented copies of the monograph to the authors and collaborators who participated in its creation.
The panel discussion, moderated by Vesna Barbić, was attended by the authors of the monograph, Jasminka Grgurević, conservator-restorer, and Neven Staničić, professor of literature and cultural worker, as well as Prof. Dr. Đorđe Bubalo from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, who is also a reviewer of the publication.
Speaking about the city's cultural identity, Neven Staničić reminded that Tivat, although often perceived as the youngest city in Boka Bay, has a rich tradition.
"Tivat always bears the label of a young city. This is understandable when it is located in the neighborhood of Kotor, Perast, Risan and Herceg Novi. However, we record more than a century of theatrical and musical tradition, as well as a significant history of professional education," said Staničić.
He emphasized that Tivat is a city that was built throughout history by people who came to it and found their home there, emphasizing that the new monograph also brings valuable insights into the period of the 1930s, which was not sufficiently represented in the previous edition.
"We are in a time when it is often believed that everything started with us. This unfairly suppresses history. We owe a lot to our ancestors, and every new reading of the past brings new knowledge," concluded Staničić.
Jasminka Grgurević presented the building and architectural heritage of the Tivat region, pointing out its connection with economic and social conditions throughout the centuries.
"The area of the Tivat Bay has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds, remains of roads, fortifications, economic villas and hydrotechnical systems. The sea represented the main communication, and the network of roads and paths towards Vrmac shaped the spatial development of this area. The remains of summer houses, today integrated into the urban structure of the city, are a valuable testimony to the medieval development of Tivat," Grgurević pointed out.
Prof. Dr. Đorđe Bubalo spoke about the challenges of examining the historical development of the Tivat area, especially the administrative units that were part of wider geographical and social spaces over time. He particularly emphasized the importance of the chapter dedicated to flora and fauna.
"Plant and animal species are disappearing before our eyes, which is why it is extremely important that we preserve data on the current biodiversity of Tivat and its surroundings for future generations," said Bubalo.
Speaking about the publication itself, he pointed out that the combination of research work, authorial freedom, and editorial vision allows the monograph to examine the past, present, and development perspectives of the city.
The musical program featured performances by students of the Tivat Music School, members of Nonet, and violinist Ece Dora Taskent. A special contribution to the festive atmosphere was made by members of the "Boka" Cultural and Artistic Association, who welcomed guests and participants of the promotion in traditional Boka costumes.
In the lobby of the Municipality of Tivat, works by students of the "Drago Milović" Elementary School are exhibited, published as part of a monograph, which illustrate Tivat legends and stories.
