Digital cameras were installed in order to investigate the biodiversity of the Morača river canyon, with an emphasis on certain species of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, invertebrates, fish and birds, on which the eventual construction of the hydroelectric power plant would have a disastrous impact.
The research has been carried out by the non-governmental organization "Green home" and the World Wide Fund for Nature since the beginning of this month.
"The goal of the research is to collect the necessary data on biodiversity in order to assess the impact of the series of dams/accumulations for the production of electricity on Morača on the species that are on the Habitats Directive as habitats important for those species," the NGO "Green home" announced.
For research purposes, six experts from Montenegro were hired, and in cooperation with the Croatian Institute for Biodiversity, bathymetric recording of part of the Morača riverbed will be done.
The locations that will be covered by the research are the confluence of Mrtvica and Morača, the Sjevernica canyon, the Morača Monastery and the location downstream from the Morača Monastery.
"Previous researches in the area of the Morača River have given indications that the previously mentioned locations have exceptional rural/landscape features and rich biodiversity," claims this NGO.
They will conduct research until September of the current year, after which they will create a report on the conducted biodiversity testing.
