KCCG introduces new method of treating benign thyroid nodules

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of benign thyroid nodules was successfully performed for the first time at the Clinical Center (KCCG), which, as announced by the health institution, marked a significant step forward in the development of modern minimally invasive medicine in Montenegro.

The KCCG said that the procedure was performed by radiology specialist Tamara Tapušković and Professor Luigi Solbiati, one of the pioneers of interventional radiology and a world-renowned expert in the field of thermal ablation methods, who was the first in the world to perform the ablation method (with ethanol).

As they stated, radiofrequency ablation is a modern, minimally invasive procedure that, with the help of ultrasound guidance and heat generated by radiofrequency energy, specifically destroys the tissue of a benign thyroid nodule.

"The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, without a surgical incision and without the need for general anesthesia, and patients return to daily activities after a short recovery period," the statement says.

The KCCG explained that this method is intended primarily for patients with symptomatic benign nodules that cause a feeling of pressure in the neck, difficulty swallowing, aesthetic problems, or progressive increase in volume.

"In a large number of cases, it allows for the avoidance of surgical treatment, preservation of thyroid function, and a significant reduction in the risk of complications that may accompany surgery," the statement said.

The KCCG said that by introducing radiofrequency ablation, this health institution is becoming part of modern European centers that offer patients the latest minimally invasive therapeutic procedures.

As they said, the successful performance of the first procedure is the result of months of preparation, training of medical staff, and the procurement of specialized equipment.

"Of particular value is the cooperation with Professor Solbiati, whose many years of experience and global contribution to the development of interventional radiology represent a significant incentive for the further development of this field in Montenegro," the statement states.

The KCCG said that Solbati also held a lecture on the topic "The Art and Trends of Thermal Ablation", as well as a "hands-on" workshop where interested doctors had the opportunity to try performing this method on a model.

"In the coming period, it is planned to continuously perform radiofrequency ablation at the KCCG, which will provide patients with access to this modern treatment method within the national healthcare system, while improving the quality of healthcare," the statement says.
