GI May 21st: It is important to remember the values that July 13th carries within itself
We are celebrating the Statehood Day of independent Montenegro for the twentieth time. However, instead of the date of July 13th truly uniting all the inhabitants of this country, it seems that its values have never been more contested than today, the Civic Initiative (GI) assessed on May 21st.
According to them, the clerical and neo-Chetnik politics in power are doing everything they can to nullify everything that July 13th represents as the cornerstone of Montenegrin identity.
"Thus, the values of July 13, 1878, when Montenegro's state independence was recognized at the Berlin Congress, have also found themselves under the distorted mirror of relativization. Although that system and that ideology (with all its good and bad sides and mistakes) have long since disappeared, it still serves today as an alibi for the current disguised neo-fascists from the highest state addresses to build a deceptive and dangerous narrative, and to present themselves and show themselves to us as so-called conservative democrats. With the same logic and motive of fighting against the 'evil system' created after World War II, they themselves embarked on the greatest crimes in the 1990s, the most tragic symbol of which is precisely the genocide that we commemorated two days ago. "July 13th unites the statehood and freedom of Montenegro. It reminds us of the international recognition of the Montenegrin state in 1878, but also of the magnificent anti-fascist uprising of 1941, when the people of Montenegro were among the first in enslaved Europe to rise up against occupation, fascism and humiliation. The anti-fascist tradition is also deeply rooted in Boka Kotorska, whose citizens, fighters and patriots made a significant contribution to the National Liberation Struggle, confirming that freedom, unity and resistance to the occupier are the lasting values of this region," the statement emphasizes.
The Boka Forum added that "that is why Statehood Day is not just a date from the past."

Fascism, however, has not remained trapped in the past. Anti-fascism is not just a historical lesson, but alive, urban and modern in every free-thinking citizen of Montenegro, the Socialist People's Party (SNP) announced.
They congratulated citizens on July 13th - Statehood Day and the Day of the Uprising of the People of Montenegro.
"July 13th connects two key pillars of our identity: international recognition from 1878 and the nationwide uprising against fascism in 1941. Therefore, anti-fascism is not just a historical lesson, but is alive, urban and modern in every free-thinking citizen of Montenegro. In this spirit, we are saying that only by preserving the heritage of our ancestors can we build a society in which solidarity, justice and mutual respect are supreme values," the statement reads.

The struggle for the values of civic Montenegro continues, only today the enemy is far more cunning and perfidious, and often operates from within the system of state power itself. We know them very well, just as our ancestors knew them, and their victims constantly remind us that the fight is not over, that we are not the same, and that we have the task before us to preserve and improve our country, thus teaching the younger generation to remain consistent and faithful to its true libertarian and sincere anti-fascist tradition. "That Montenegro is eternal!", concluded Nenezić.

Empires, borders and eras have changed, but one unchanging fact has remained: it has survived thanks to ancestors who refused to give up their identity, their tradition and their right to decide their own future. Which, unfortunately, is not the case today," the statement reads.
He said that July 13th "is not just a date from the past," but "a pledge for the future." "It reminds us that the state is not preserved through divisions, but through work, responsibility, and determination to always put the interests of citizens ahead of any individual or party interest."
Šćekić said that today, when we talk about Montenegro's European path, "we must clearly state that the path to Europe must not mean renouncing ourselves."
"European Montenegro cannot and must not be Montenegro without its historical memory, without an official language that is the majority and that is desired by 45% of our citizens, and without symbols that show respect for the vow of the ancestors who created and defended this country. Our obligation is to build a society of equal opportunities, a society of justice, and a society in which every citizen will have the opportunity to live from their work and plan their future in their country, but also to feel wholeheartedly like their own in their own country."
He believes that, at this moment, "the authorities who came to power thanks to the support of the Serbian people" are increasingly "remaining mute to the messages coming from the field and to the expectations of those who have placed their trust in them."
"Their range of hearing does not exceed the limits of their own interest and political comfort. If our ancestors had been guided by the same logic, we would not be living in this region today, nor would we have preserved the faith, name and tradition that we carry with pride today. They sacrificed themselves for their descendants, while today's political elites are expected to at least not forget those thanks to whom they were given the opportunity to lead this country," said Šćekić.
Therefore, as he said, "we cannot remain silent in the face of the fact that the issues of the Serbian language, the tricolor of the Kingdom of Montenegro and dual citizenship have been pushed aside, as if they were not important and as if they did not represent part of the identity and feelings of a large number of citizens of this country". This, he added, should not have happened after August 30, 2020, a date that "awakened hope in many that the time of equal respect for all identities and all citizens of Montenegro would come".
Šćekić said that the fight for a European future and the "fight to preserve identity" are not opposites.
"On the contrary, only a people that respects its roots can move forward with a confident step. I am sure that if there is a will for agreement, there is a way for us to enter the EU with our heads held high, with our true history, but also the present and the real situation, our values, but also with actions and responsibility towards our own country and every citizen. Our obligation is to keep the vow of our ancestors and to hand it over to the generations that come stronger than we found it. Because a people that forgets its roots risks losing its future. We are fighting for a civic Montenegro that remembers its ancestors, respects all its citizens and bravely builds its European future, without denying itself and its identity. A civic Montenegro cannot exist if the attitudes, identity and rights of a third of its population, or almost half of its citizens, are ignored, depending on which angle we view social reality from," he adds.
Šćekić said that a "true civic state" is not one that "seeks assimilation," but one that respects diversity and ensures equal status for all its citizens.
"Therefore, I once again call on all people of good will to proudly cherish and preserve our historical symbols and traditions, so that the tricolor flags fly throughout Montenegro today and tomorrow as a symbol of freedom, duration and historical continuity of our state and our people. Zogović: The stolen referendum of 2006 did not create Montenegro, but rather enabled the privatization and criminalization of Montenegro
July 13th is a date that uniquely connects two great moments in our history, announced the Vice President of the Democratic People's Party (DNP), Milun Zogović.
He stated in the statement that on July 13, 1878, Montenegro's right to take its place among recognized states as an independent state was internationally recognized. and that on July 13, 1941, the people of Montenegro raised one of the first mass uprisings against fascism in enslaved Europe, confirming that freedom is not only a right, but also an obligation.
"These two dates are connected by the same idea - the fight for freedom, dignity and the right to decide our own destiny. That is why it is important to remember that Montenegro was not created in 2006. That is when the private state of Milo Đukanović was created, whose worst ideological discriminatory achievements against the Serbian people and the largest linguistic community still persist today. The stolen referendum of 2006 did not create Montenegro, but rather enabled the privatization and criminalization of Montenegro through the ruthless robbery of state property during the rule of the DPS. The ideological basis of such a private state was Serbophobia, falsification of history and an attempt to assimilate the Serbian people in Montenegro, which is why it is necessary for Montenegro to be freed from the worst achievements of the former regime, which were founded on the treacherous July 12, 1941, and not on the libertarian July 13, 1941," Zogović emphasized.
He added that the anti-fascist struggle and the July 13th Uprising remain Montenegro's enduring testament that freedom has no price and that betrayal cannot be presented as patriotism.
"The uprising of July 13, 1941 was a decisive response to the treacherous St. Peter's Day Assembly, held just the day before under the auspices of the Italian occupation authorities, which attempted to legitimize the occupation and the establishment of a puppet order. The ideas of cooperation with the occupier, which were advocated by quislings like Sekula Drljević, have been clearly condemned by history. That is why it is important to preserve anti-fascist values and historical memory even today. It is necessary for libertarian Montenegro to finally free itself from the ideology of Sekula Drljević, which became the dominant state ideology after 2006. Persisting in the ideological positions of collaborators with the Nazis and fascists is a direct legitimization of the most destructive ideologies in the memory of humanity," Zogović stated.
In his words, "Montenegrin statehood has much deeper historical roots than 2006, confirmed by centuries of existence, international recognition in 1878, and the libertarian tradition symbolized by July 13, 1941."
