Today, Montenegro celebrates Statehood Day, in memory of July 13, 1878, when it was recognized as an independent state at the Berlin Congress and the same date in 1941, when the Montenegrin people began their uprising against fascism.
President Jakov Milatović, at a reception marking Statehood Day at the residence in Cetinje, said that July 13th is the date when the brightest pages of Montenegrin history were written in two centuries.
"In 1878, when Montenegro was internationally recognized, and in 1941, when it stood up to defend itself from the occupiers. That is why July 13th is a symbol of Montenegrin statehood," Milatović said.
In his congratulatory message on July 13, Statehood Day, Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandić said that Montenegro is free today and that the time of autocracy is over.
"Let us dedicate ourselves to the goal of making Montenegro a country of free, happy and wealthy people, just as, I deeply believe, our ancestors wanted, who took up arms on July 13, 1941, to drive the occupier from our country," Mandić said in his congratulatory message.
Greetings to citizens on the occasion of July 13 were sent, among others, by political parties, organizations, mayors and municipal assemblies.
Non-working days on the occasion of the Statehood Day of Montenegro, based on the Law on State and Other Holidays, are July 13th and 14th.
