A contract for the supervision of the execution of works on the second phase of the construction of the sewage network, worth 700 thousand euros, was signed in Nikšić today, the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development (MERS) announced.

The department said that by signing the contract, another important step was taken towards the realization of an investment worth a total of 13 million euros, aimed at improving the wastewater management system in Nikšić.

The project "Construction of Phase II of the Sewerage Network in the Municipality of Nikšić" includes the construction of a sewerage network in four suburban settlements - Rubeža, Oštrovac, Dragova Luka and Ćemenca.

"With its implementation, around ten thousand residents will be connected to a modern sewage system, which will significantly improve wastewater management and improve the quality of life of citizens," said MERS.

The project, as they explained, envisages the construction of approximately 40 kilometers of new fecal sewage network, the separation of the existing atmospheric and fecal sewage systems, as well as the adaptation and improvement of the operation of the existing Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).

For the implementation of the project, the Steering Board of the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) approved ten million euros in grants, while the remaining amount was provided through a financing agreement between Montenegro and the European Investment Bank (EIB).

Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development Damjan Ćulafić emphasized that this project represents one of the most significant investments in the field of municipal infrastructure and environmental protection in Nikšić.

"I am particularly pleased that the implementation of another capital project has begun, which will bring concrete benefits to citizens. Four suburban settlements that have not had a sewage network so far will receive a modern wastewater disposal system, which will improve the living conditions of around ten thousand residents and further protect the environment," said Ćulafić.

He thanked the international partners, the EIB and WBIF, as well as the Municipality of Nikšić, the PROCON implementation unit and all participants for their commitment to the implementation of this important project.

Ćulafić pointed out that investments are currently being made in the modernization of the water supply and wastewater management systems in Mojkovac, Rožaje, Kolašin, Pljevlja, Ulcinj and other municipalities.

"Our goal is to provide citizens with better quality municipal infrastructure, a healthier environment and standards that correspond to European practice," said Ćulafić.
