Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced today, in a meeting in virtual and augmented reality, that the new name of the social media platform will be Meta.
"We're a company that builds technology to connect," Zuckerberg said.
"together we can finally put people at the center of our technology. And together we can unlock a much larger creator economy".
"To reflect who we are and what we hope to build," Zuckerberg added, as reported by RTS.
He said the name Facebook doesn't fully encompass everything the company does.
"Right now, our brand is so tightly tied to one product. But over time, I hope we'll be seen as a metaversal company," Zuckerberg said.
Facebook showed off a series of concept videos that highlighted the vision of the metaverse, where you could send a hologram of yourself to a concert with a friend who is attending in real life, sitting around virtual tables meeting with colleagues or playing video games with friends.
