Japan is currently developing the world's fastest train, the L0 series, a magnetic levitation train manufactured and tested by Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central), capable of reaching speeds of up to 603,5 kilometers per hour, Euronews reported today on its website.

That train will surpass the speed of the current fastest train in the world in China, the Shanghai Maglev, which reaches a speed of 460,2 kilometers per hour.

The fastest trains in Europe, the French TGV and the Italian AGV Italo, have maximum operating speeds between 306 and 354 kilometers per hour.

The L0 series will use magnetic levitation (maglev), a technology that lifts the train above the tracks.

By combining electricity and magnets, this method allows the train to "glide" through the air at previously unimaginable speeds.

The new train is expected to be able to connect Tokyo to Osaka in one hour, while the current journey takes between two hours and 20 minutes and four hours, depending on the type of train.

The new train will be in service in 2034 or 2035, it has been announced.
