The swimming training of the triathletes was canceled today, for the second day in a row, due to the worrying quality of the water in the river Sena.
The organizers of the Olympic Games in Paris are optimistic that triathletes will be able to swim in the Seine on Tuesday, when the competitions begin.
The governing body of the sport World Triathlon and the organization's medical team, together with city officials, are counting on sunny weather and higher temperatures in the next 36 hours to improve the water quality and bring it below the necessary limits for organizing the swimming part of the competition. In addition to swimming, triathletes compete in cycling and running.
World Triathlon has decided to cancel today's swimming training, after a meeting regarding water quality.
The organizers of the Games and the World Triathlon announced that tests carried out on Sunday showed that the level of water quality "did not provide sufficient guarantees to allow training to take place" and that this was due to recent rain that also fell during the opening ceremony on Friday.
Swimming in the Seine is generally prohibited due to the poor quality of the water. The organizers invested 1,4 billion euros to prepare the river for the Olympic Games. In addition to the triathlon, marathon swimming competitions should be held on the Seine on August 8 and 9.
The mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, swam in the Seine on June 17, less than two weeks after the start of the Olympic Games.
