Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic said today that winning the Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games is perhaps the greatest sporting success of his life.
"I'm completely in shock from emotions, from everything. I said after the semi-final that the goal was achieved, a medal secured. I wanted to enter the final, that's something I didn't manage the previous four times. Everyone wanted me to go for gold, I deep down I was going for it," Đoković said to RTS after the match.
Djokovic won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in Paris today, after defeating the Spaniard Carlos Alkaras 7:6, 7:6.
"The fact that I'm in the final helped me to go into today's match more relaxed. The convincing defeat in the Wimbledon final against Alkaras helped me prepare for this match. I couldn't have done worse than that in London. I went for all or nothing. In the decisive moments I ignited forehands like he does and I finished with a forehand winner," said the second world player.
Djokovic was emotional after the match, he cried and went to greet his family.
"I went to hug them, I have a billion emotions that are mixed up. I am too proud and too happy to have brought gold to Serbia. It is perhaps the greatest sporting success of my life," Djokovic said.
Winning the Olympic tournament is Djokovic's first title this season.
