Olympiakos coach Jorgos Barcokas is the winner of the "Aleksandar Gomeljski" award, which the Euroleague awards every year to the best coach in the elite basketball competition.
Barcokas took over Olimpiakos in July of last year after the departure of Dušan Ivković and, despite all expectations, led the team to the second consecutive title of European champion, winning the final against Real (100:88).
It was the third European championship title for the team from Piraeus, and they had previously triumphed in 1997 and 2012 under the leadership of Dusan Ivković.
Barcokas will be presented with the award on July 4 in Barcelona during the group draw for the new Euroleague season.
In the competition for the best coach, Barcokas triumphed ahead of Pablo Las (Real Madrid), Ettore Messina (CSKA) and Avi Pasquale (Barcelona).
Before Bacokas, Olympiakos playmaker Vasilis Spanulis was named the tournament's most valuable player (MVP), while Kostas Papanikolaou was named the best young player.
So far, this award has been won by Pini Gershon (2005, Maccabi), Etore Mesina (2006 and 2008, CSKA), Željko Obradović (2007 and 2011, Panathinaikos), Duško Vujošević (2009, Partizan) and Chavi Paskval (2010, Barcelona) and Dušan Ivković (2012, Olympiakos).
The Aleksandar Gomeljski Award has been awarded since 2005, when the creator of basketball in the USSR and the winner of the first three titles in the then Champions Cup with Riga, passed away.
